Don’t miss out!
Our Top Choice

This is the area and hotel we loved the most and suggest booking ASAP!
Our FAVORITE area to stay in Ponta Delgada is the Historic Center. It’s the best base for first-time visitors, combining historic charm, walkability, and easy access to the city’s top sights, restaurants, and waterfront.
We recommend staying at Hotel Do Colegio. Set inside a beautiful 19th-century manor house, this unique hotel is just a short walk from the Portas da Cidade and waterfront. Plus, you’ll love the courtyard pool and top-notch on-site restaurants!
Overview of the Best Areas and Best Hotels

Ponta Delgada is the easiest and most convenient base on São Miguel, especially for first-time visitors who want restaurants, tour departures, car rentals, and airport access all close by. The city itself is compact, but where you stay really depends on the kind of trip you want. The Historic Center is best for first-timers who want dining, shopping, historic streets, the marina, and evening wandering on foot.
Meanwhile, the marina and waterfront areas feel a little more open, with better ocean views and easy access to whale-watching trips, harbor walks, and boat tours. On the other hand, eastern Ponta Delgada, including São Roque and Fajã de Baixo, is calmer and more practical for travelers who want easier parking, more space, and a quieter base for exploring the island.
Central Ponta Delgada is very walkable once you’re there, but most visitors will still want a rental car to properly explore São Miguel, since crater lakes, hot springs, viewpoints, beaches, and smaller towns are spread across the island. Taxis are useful for short city trips, but not really practical for exploring the whole island because they can get expensive quickly.
Keep in mind that parking can be a bit tricky in the Historic Center, so it’s worth either avoiding it altogether or choosing a hotel with parking included. If you’re visiting in peak season, it’s definitely worth booking accommodation early because the good central hotels fill up quickly.
Here are the best hotels and areas in Ponta Delgada:
- Historic Center – Best for first-time visitors – This is one of the best areas to stay if you want to be right in the middle of the restaurants, marina, shopping, and nightlife, and don’t mind a little noise or slightly higher prices. Hotel do Colegio is our favorite stay here, set inside a 19th-century manor house that was once a school and music academy, which makes it way more interesting than your average hotel.
- The Marina / Waterfront – Best for harbor views – If you’d rather wake up to ocean views and watch the big cruise ships roll in while sipping your morning coffee, this is probably where you’ll want to stay, especially if boat tours and water activities are a priority. Hotel Marina Atlântico is a polished stay with an outdoor pool, a heated indoor lap pool, and a nice mix of casual and more contemporary dining options for all tastes.
- Eastern Ponta Delgada – Best for a quiet stay – The Azores are a popular beach destination, and this part of the island proves it with its volcanic black sand beaches and natural swimming areas, plus, as a bonus, pineapple growing inside historic glass greenhouses. We picked Aparthotel Barracuda for your stay here because it’s right on the beach and gives you the kind of space you’ll appreciate if you’re traveling with family.
Important Tip
Multiple trips to Ponta Delgada have taught us that this city doesn’t reward spontaneity when it comes to planning. The good places get snapped up months in advance, leaving the overpriced and underwhelming options for last-minute travelers.
The sweet spot for booking accommodations in Ponta Delgada is 3-4 months out—enough time to secure good rates but not so far ahead that you’re locking in plans excessively early.
Where to Stay in Ponta Delgada
Historic Center

BEST FOR FIRST-TIME VISITORS
Pros
- Super easy to navigate on foot
- Easy access to sightseeing spots, airport transfers, shopping, dining, and tours
- Feels more traditional with cobblestone streets and old whitewashed buildings
Cons
- The narrow, one-way streets aren’t ideal for driving, and parking is limited
- It can get quite noisy, especially when cruise ships dock
The historic center lies around the Portas da Cidade gates and São Pedro parish. It’s the oldest part of Ponta Delgada, filled with 17th and 18th-century architecture, cobbled streets, whitewashed buildings edged in black basalt, Baroque churches, and little plazas that always lead you back to coffee or pastries. The Portas da Cidade (or the City Gates) are the main landmark here, once part of the city’s defensive walls and today more of a meeting point where everyone eventually seems to pass through.
Even if sightseeing usually isn’t your thing, there are a few places here that are hard to ignore, especially the Gothic-style church Igreja Matriz de São Sebastião, as well as the Forte de São Brás, a 16th-century fortress built to protect the city from pirates.
We love this area because it’s compact and easy to get around on foot. Most days and nights here involve strolling to cafés and popping into local markets just to see what everyone is buying. Staying here means hearing the city slowly wake up in the morning, wandering to the waterfront for coffee, and walking back after dinner without needing transport.
Despite being one of the busiest parts of the city, it still feels quiet and unhurried, making it an easy choice for first-time visitors.
NINE DOTS Azorean Art Boutique Hotel – $$$

NINE DOTS Azorean Art Boutique Hotel has pretty much everything you’d want for a luxury Azores getaway, starting with its central location. You’re never far from warm pastries and fresh morning coffee, sightseeing spots, or all the action, plus it’s only about a 5-minute drive from João Paulo II Airport. Another great thing here is the Roman-style saltwater spa pool, a really nice place to hang out and chill after a long day.
Also, with design elements inspired by the area’s 15th-century history, it feels like a much more interesting place to stay than your average hotel, especially since it also doubles as a living gallery. Walking through the property, you’re surrounded by paintings and sculptures on nearly every floor, so it’s a really nice bonus if you enjoy art. Prices usually start from around €150+, although they can climb quite a bit during peak season.
If NINE DOTS Azorean Art Boutique Hotel is all booked up, Mercure Ponta Delgada Azores is an easy choice for families, with an outdoor swimming pool, a separate one for children, and delicious buffet breakfasts. Staying here also puts you within a short walk of the marina, the Portas da Cidade, Antero de Quental Garden, and Antonio Borges Garden.
Hotel do Colégio – $$

Hotel do Colegio is a great mid-range option in the historic center, set inside a 19th-century manor house. It definitely doesn’t feel like your standard hotel once you realize it used to be a private school and music conservatory. And especially since you can still see the original stone arches around the property.
This was actually our favorite choice, and we loved relaxing by the courtyard pool, which is hard to imagine was once a schoolyard. There are also two restaurants here: one award-winning restaurant serving delicious Azorean specialties, and the other, Haibu, offering traditional Japanese dishes when you need a little break from Portuguese classics.
It’s also an easy walk to the waterfront and Portas da Cidade. If you’re driving, you’ll be happy to know parking is available for just €7, because finding a space around here can be a real headache. Prices start at around €130+ per night.
Another hotel in the area that we loved is Casa da Galeria with a rooftop pool, sun terrace, steam room, gym, and most importantly, apartments with kitchenettes, which makes such a difference if you’re traveling with family or just like having more space and cooking now and then. It’s located in the Arts Quarter, just steps from the Carlos Machado Museum and the city harbor.
Canadiano Urban Nature Hotel is a great option with spacious rooms, free parking, a TV room, and a 24-hour reception, ideal for couples and families who want somewhere comfortable without spending a fortune. From here, you’re still close to both São Miguel Football Stadium and João Paulo II Airport, both just a short drive away.
Hotel Alcides – $

Hotel Alcides is one of those places that ends up being better than expected, and makes you glad you didn’t overspend on one of the nearby 4-star hotels. It’s simple, but laid out well, and a good option for anyone who doesn’t care much about luxury extras. What really keeps people coming back, though, is Restaurante Alcides, one of the city’s most respected local spots that’s been around since 1908.
There’s also a delicious buffet breakfast and even “to-go” breakfast bags if you’re checking out early. The hotel also has a cozy lounge with board games, plus a sports bar next door, which is pretty handy if you like socializing. It’s centrally located on a pedestrian-friendly street, just steps from some of the city’s best-known sights and about a 10-minute ride from João Paulo II Airport.
With prices starting at around €60+ per night, it’s hard to complain.
The Azoriani Boutique leans a little more modern, with floor-to-ceiling windows, great views, and the option to rent a car or bicycle directly from the hotel. Its location near the university district, the Arts Quarter, the waterfront, and the historic center makes it especially convenient if it’s your first time visiting and you want to stay central without spending too much.
Another no-fuss stay for first-timers, Hotel Matriz is located in the historic center, steps from the Church of Saint Sebastian and near shopping and dining. You get free parking, free breakfast, and soundproofed rooms for a good night’s rest, which sounds like a pretty great deal if you ask us!

Marina / Waterfront

BEST FOR HARBOR VIEWS
Pros
- Highly walkable and scenic
- Lively atmosphere with tons of cafés, restaurants, and shops
- Easy access to whale-watching tours and boat trips
Cons
- Can get very noisy, especially during peak season and once the cruise ships dock
- Parking is strict, and it can be expensive
- Hotels here are usually some of the most expensive in the city
Immediately south of the historic center, the marina area hugs the harbor. The waterfront promenade connects the center with the marina, with restaurants lining the water and boats leaving daily for whale-watching and deep-sea fishing trips. It’s a great place to be on any given day.
Staying here definitely comes with its own perks, especially if having a balcony overlooking the water is how you imagine your vacation. That said, accommodation here is usually a little more polished and slightly more expensive, but once you see the location, it all starts making a lot more sense (and you don’t mind paying a little extra).
Most days here involve waterfront walks, watching leisure boats and yachts, random stops at cafés or parks, and, no matter what, you end up back by the water again. Conveniently, the historic center is still only a short stroll away, so you’re never far from the local taverns and history if you feel like changing the scenery a little.
Overall, this area keeps you close to everything, but with a lot more ocean and open space around you.
Grand Hotel Açores Atlântico – $$$

When it comes to 5-star luxury and excellence, no one here really does it better than Grand Hotel Açores Atlântico. It’s a mix of elegance, nautical themes, comfort, and upscale extras, so basically, if money isn’t really an issue, this is where you’ll want to stay.
You get tons of perks: al fresco fine dining, a great spa, a heated indoor saltwater pool where you can easily spend hours chilling, and cozy, airy rooms that make you want to cancel your plans and stay in. Plus, overlooking the seafront promenade, you really couldn’t ask for a better location.
Ok, there’s something else too: valet parking and even beach towels for guests to use around the island. Seriously, hardly anyone else does that here. Expect to pay around €140+ per night, depending on your room and travel dates, which honestly feels pretty reasonable considering everything included.
If you want something more modern and trendy with a rooftop pool and spacious family suites, Octant Ponta Delgada is definitely worth looking at. It sits right on the harbor near the commercial marina and casino, but you’re still only a short walk from the downtown restaurants.
Hotel Marina Atlântico – $$

For something slightly cheaper but just as polished, Hotel Marina Atlântico has the perks and design that give the place a bit of a luxury cruise ship vibe (and that’s not a bad thing at all).
The hotel sits along the busy waterfront strip facing the ocean and is around a 20-minute ride from João Paulo II Airport. You’re also within walking distance of restaurants, shops, cafes, and the marina, so you’ll barely need any transport to get around.
Breakfast here is really good, with hot dishes, Portuguese pastries, local meats, and cheeses. Plus, with the main harbor just steps away, it’s a really convenient base if you’re planning whale watching or boat tours. All this comes at around €100+ per night, which feels like pretty good value for what you get.
With a selection of elegant standard rooms and super spacious apartments with kitchenettes, Hotel Gaivota Azores is a solid backup if Hotel Marina Atlântico is fully booked. Plus, it’s located right on the main avenue next to Portas do Mar, so everything’s basically right there.
Another one of our absolute favorites in the area is Antillia Hotel, with large modern apartments with kitchenettes, indoor and outdoor pools, a gym, and a sauna, which is probably why so many families and groups stay here. You’re also within about a 10-minute walk of Portas da Cidade and the historic Baixa area, which means you barely need a car once you’re here.
Neat Hotel Avenida – $

Don’t worry, the waterfront isn’t all seaside resorts that break the bank. Neat Hotel Avenida is an excellent budget-friendly option with a younger, urban, and more modern style, using natural materials like wood and cork throughout the hotel (proof that budget-friendly doesn’t have to mean plain, sad beige walls).
It’s simple, yes, but you still get a 24-hour gym, sauna, Turkish bath, a really good buffet breakfast with local products, plus a lounge bar and 24-hour reception. Staff are always around to help with restaurant bookings and car rentals, which will save you a lot of unnecessary stress (talking from experience here).
You’re also directly across from a shopping mall and just steps from the marina, so you can easily explore most of the city on foot, while boat tours and water activities are practically around the corner. All this still starts at around €70+ per night.
Hotel Camoes is a great alternative within the same price range, though it leans more traditional, with period furniture and a warmer, homier feel from the start. Another big plus is the location, just a 3-minute walk from Portas da Cidade and only steps from the marina.

Eastern Ponta Delgada

BEST FOR A QUIET STAY
Pros
- Great for beach vacations
- Quieter and more residential, especially ideal for families
- Good mix of restaurants and cafés
Cons
- Beaches can get crowded during summer and sunny weekends
- Parking near the beach can be tricky
- Much quieter at night
Eastern Ponta Delgada includes the residential areas of São Roque and Fajã de Baixo. This is where you’ll probably want to stay if you’re after a quieter vacation with daily beach trips and slower evenings away from the crowds.
The area stretches along the coast towards Praia das Milícias and the famous pineapple greenhouses. São Roque gives you quick access to the volcanic black sand beach, natural swimming pools, and water activities like surfing and paddleboarding, so it’s a great fit if you plan on spending a lot of time by the ocean.
Meanwhile, Fajã de Baixo is best known for its pineapple greenhouses, where you can walk through the plantations and try local pineapple treats like liqueurs and jams (plan on buying quite a few, probably more than expected). Part of what makes this area so nice are the old manor houses, greenery, country estates, and little historic chapels around, so it feels more traditional.
Choosing to stay on this side of Ponta Delgada means being close to the historic center and airport, while still getting the slower, crowd-free vacation you packed your bags for.
Senhora da Rosa, Tradition & Nature Hotel – $$$

One of our favorite stays in this area is Senhora da Rosa Tradition & Nature Hotel, mostly because it’s not your typical hotel setup. The hot water plunge pool built inside a pineapple greenhouse is what catches your attention first, which doesn’t even feel that surprising here. There’s also a rooftop pool, a spa with aromatherapy and a Turkish hammam, yoga classes, and even a private padel court, something you don’t come across that often on São Miguel.
The property used to be a farm estate, and some of the old wooden granaries were turned into the lodging it is today, which helps it stand out from more standard modern resorts. It’s close enough to Ponta Delgada center for convenience, but far enough from the airport that you’re not constantly hearing planes. Prices start at around €110+ per night – not too bad for everything included.
If the Senhora da Rosa Tradition & Nature Hotel is fully booked, Delta Hotels by Marriott Azores is a great alternative, especially if you prefer newer hotels where everything still feels fresh and modern (it was built in 2025). Location-wise, you’re about a 15-minute walk from Praia de São Roque and roughly 2.8 km (around 1.7 miles) from Portas da Cidade.
Aqua – Pópulo Eco Village offers direct beachfront access, luxury villas and apartments, a heated rooftop pool, and even personal trainer services. From here, you can reach Ponta Delgada’s historic center in just a 7-minute drive.
Aparthotel Barracuda – $$

If you like having more than just a standard hotel room, Aparthotel Barracuda is a really solid option, especially for the price. It sits directly on the volcanic black sands of Praia das Milícias, and every apartment comes with a furnished private balcony facing the Atlantic Ocean (hard to beat the views you get to wake up to).
The furniture isn’t the most modern, but the apartments are spacious, with kitchenettes for quick meals before heading out, and there’s free breakfast too. Free parking is also included, although it can get busy on sunny weekends.
The hotel is roughly 4 km (2.5 miles) east of downtown Ponta Delgada and about 7 km (4.3 miles) from João Paulo II Airport, but the best part is that there’s a public bus stop directly outside the entrance. Rates usually range between €75 and €210+ per night, depending on the season, which is hard to complain about for this location.

Renting a Car in Europe

Exploring Europe by car is a fantastic way to uncover hidden gems—think charming villages, scenic countryside, and off-the-beaten-path spots that trains and buses might miss. Driving here is generally straightforward, but it’s good to be prepared for some regional quirks.
We always use Discover Cars to book our rentals and can’t recommend them enough. It’s super easy to compare prices, check company ratings, find automatic cars (which can be tricky in Europe!), and add affordable full coverage insurance.

What’s an eSIM?
An eSIM is a digital version of a SIM card. Instead of buying a little plastic chip and swapping it into your phone, you just download it. It connects your phone to a local network in whatever country you’re visiting — no stores, no waiting, and no fiddling with tiny cards.
In simple terms, it’s the easiest way to get data and stay connected while traveling.
We’ve tested a bunch of eSIMs in North America, and after a few frustrating experiences, we’ve found our favorite — Airalo. It’s fast, reliable, and incredibly easy to use. You can set it up in minutes (even my mom managed it solo on her first try!), and the prices are some of the best out there.
🔥 Hot Tip: Choose the Europe-wide eSIM! It works across multiple countries, so you can hop from France to Italy to Spain without ever losing connection. One download, endless adventures.
