How to Spend THREE DAYS in Ponta Delgada, the Azores: 3-Day Itinerary

Planning a trip to Ponta Delgada and not sure how to spend your time? You’re in the right place.

Ponta Delgada is the perfect base for exploring São Miguel, especially if you’ve only got three days. The city itself is compact, walkable, and full of great places to eat, but you’re also within easy reach of volcanic lakes, hot springs, and coastal viewpoints, not to mention some of the best whale watching in Europe! 

We’ve put together this 3-day Ponta Delgada itinerary to help you experience a bit of everything, from food and Old Town wandering to full-day island adventures and time out on the Atlantic. Let’s get into it!

Itinerary Overview

Ponta Delgada is the ideal base for three days on São Miguel because it gives you the best of both worlds. You’ve got a lovely, walkable city to explore, but you’re also close enough to the island’s most famous landscapes! We loved being able to see a lot here without constantly having to repack our bags and change hotels, as that gets tiring fast.

We’ve designed this itinerary to keep things simple. Each day has a clear focus to ensure you experience the different aspects of Ponta Delgada to the fullest. Day 1 focuses on Ponta Delgada itself, while Day 2 is about experiencing São Miguel’s epic landscape, and Day 3 is about whale watching. 

The city itself is compact and very walkable. In fact, most of the attractions and restaurants are all within a 15-minute walk of each other, so as long as you stay in a central hotel, getting around is super easy – we’ve got recommendations at the end of the blog.

For anything further afield, taxis are readily available and fairly affordable. Renting a car for a day is a good option if you want more flexibility – we use Discover Cars to find well-priced and well-rated rentals! 

Day 1: Start with breakfast in the city, then take a Ponta Delgada food tour before exploring the Old Town and wrapping up with dinner and live music.

Day 2: Choose between two full-day guided island tours: Furnas Valley for volcanic scenery and hot springs, or São Miguel’s west coast for Sete Cidades and crater lakes.

Day 3: Go whale watching from the marina, then either hike to Lagoa do Fogo or enjoy some chill time in the city before a final dinner and drinks with a view. 

Day 1

Breakfast – Cafe Clipper

Start your first morning in Ponta Delgada at Cafe Clipper, a beloved little café-bar right in the heart of downtown. It’s an unpretentious spot where islanders start their day with coffee at the counter and friendly chatter. It’s run by the warm and welcoming owner, Ricardo, and it has that proper local feel that we always love finding on a trip!

Since Cafe Clipper opens daily at 6:30 am, except Sundays when they’re closed, it’s ideal for an early breakfast before your food tour at 10 am. I’d suggest arriving around 8:30 or 9 am so you’ve got plenty of time without rushing. Keep it light, because there’s a lot of food coming up later. We each grabbed a warm pastel de nata with a short espresso, which is the perfect breakfast if you ask me! 

Cafe Clipper is only a 5 to 10-minute walk from most centrally located hotels. Once you get here, the food tour meeting point is just a 3-minute walk away. 

Morning/Lunch – Taste your way through Ponta Delgada 

This food tour was our favorite thing that we did in Ponta Delgada! We booked it for our first day here, and it was the perfect introduction, so we recommend that you do the same.

The tour starts at 10 am and finishes around 1:30 pm. Over the course of 3.5 hours, you’ll explore a lot of the Old Town on foot as you taste different Azorean dishes, so it’s a great way to get your bearings in Ponta Delgada. 

We started at Portas da Cidade and then spent the next few hours wandering through the Old Town, stopping at a mix of local markets and small, traditional eateries. The variety of food was fantastic, as we got to try everything from local cheeses and cured meats to fresh seafood and traditional pastries. Nothing felt rushed either, as each stop gave us enough time to actually enjoy what we were eating rather than just quickly tasting and moving on!

We also have to give a shoutout to our guide, Isha, who was just amazing. Azorean cuisine is quite different from mainland Portugal in some ways, so having a local to explain the local specialties and the traditions behind them made a huge difference. By the end of the tour, we knew exactly what to look out for on menus and what dishes we wanted to order again!

If you’re into food at all, we think this is a must-do in Ponta Delgada, especially early in your trip. It’s popular, though, so grab your spot sooner rather than later.

Afternoon – Explore Ponta Delgada’s Old Town

The food tour ends right in the heart of Ponta Delgada’s Old Town, so now it’s time to do some exploring on your own! The whole area is walkable from around Portas da Cidade, and by this point, the food tour will already have helped you get your bearings.

Ponta Delgada’s Old Town is basically the historic center of the city, and it’s one of the best places to get a feel for daily life here. We like exploring this area because you don’t need to tick off loads of attractions. 

The first thing that you’ll probably notice about Ponta Delgada’s Old Town is the black and white stonework. It runs through the pavements and buildings and gives the whole area a really distinct look that feels quite different from mainland Portugal. You don’t need long to explore, either! Around 2 to 3 hours is plenty, and if you’re staying nearby, you can pop back to your hotel whenever you need to.

Start around Portas da Cidade, the iconic triple-arched gateway by the seafront. It’s the most photographed spot in Ponta Delgada and a great orientation point. Just behind it, you’ll find Igreja Matriz de São Sebastião, a 16th-century church with a really detailed Manueline stone facade.

From there, wander over to Praça Gonçalo Velho Cabral, the main square, which is usually lively throughout the day. Then make your way towards Mercado da Graça. The food tour may have already taken you here, but it’s worth coming back to do some more in-depth browsing. There are some great souvenirs here and items to take home, and it’s a great place to stock up on local cheese and produce! 

Dinner – Supléxio

For dinner, head to Supléxio, one of the most-loved casual spots in Ponta Delgada. It’s tucked along a small side street in the center, about a 10-minute walk from the Old Town. It was exactly what we wanted after a day of exploring, with a lively vibe and very satisfying food!

This is a craft beer and burger joint done right, but with a strong Azorean identity. The signature order is the 1427 Burger, made with 100% Azorean beef and served on bolo do caco, which is a traditional flatbread. It also comes with local island cheese and pineapple chutney, and it’s sooo delicious.

The Imperador Burger is another great choice if you want something loaded, and the beef quality gets a lot of praise across the board. They also have a strong craft beer selection, with Portuguese and Azorean options by the bottle and a few on tap.

Supléxio doesn’t take reservations, so it’s walk-in only. I’d aim to arrive right around 7 pm to avoid waiting too long, especially in the high season!

Evening – Listen to live music at Lava Jazz

After dinner, walk over to Lava Jazz to enjoy some live music. It’s housed inside the historic Coliseu Micaelense on Av. Roberto Ivens, about a 10-minute walk from Supléxio through the center of Ponta Delgada.

This is one of the best places in the city for music, and it has such a lovely atmosphere! The space is intimate and warmly lit, so it feels more like a stylish living room than a big venue. There really aren’t any bad seats, and the sound quality is excellent throughout.

The lineup changes regularly, but you can expect everything from jazz and blues to bossa nova, Portuguese fado, and Azorean folk. It’s a great way to experience a more local side of Ponta Delgada without having a huge night out.

Shows usually run from 9 pm to 11 pm Sunday to Thursday, and from 10 pm to 1 am on Fridays and Saturdays. If you’ve got a little extra time before the music starts, we recommend taking a stroll along the waterfront first.

Day 2

Choose your adventure with a full-day island tour 

Day 2 is all about getting out of Ponta Delgada and seeing more of São Miguel. The island is absolutely beautiful, but the roads can be winding, and the best viewpoints aren’t always obvious, so a guided tour is a really easy way to cover a lot without worrying about driving or planning the route yourself.

We’ve included two full-day options here, and both depart at 9 am with hotel pickup included. Just make sure to grab breakfast at your hotel or a nearby café before you go, as you’ll be out for most of the day.

The Furnas Valley tour is the one to choose if you’re most interested in volcanic landscapes and hot springs. You’ll also get to enjoy the island’s famous cozido stew, which is cooked underground using geothermal heat. It’s a brilliant option if you want to understand São Miguel’s volcanic side.

The São Miguel West tour is the better option if you want those big, dramatic views the island is famous for! You’ll visit Sete Cidades and crater lakes as you explore the rugged coastline, and see the striking black sand beaches. If it’s your first time in the Azores and you want the most iconic scenery, this is probably the one I’d pick.

Full day – Option 1: Journey to the volcanic heart of the island, Furnas Valley

This Furnas Valley tour is one of the most unique experiences you can have in Portugal, and it’s an absolute must if you’re visiting São Miguel! While the island is full of incredible scenery, Furnas is completely different – and totally unique. I mean, it’s a geothermal area, so the landscape is actually alive! 

What makes this tour so great is how much it fits into one day without feeling rushed – you’d never be able to do it all on your own! It includes hotel pickup, so you don’t need to worry about arranging any transport yourself or finding the meeting point. You’ll be collected at around 9 am and get dropped off again at around 5 pm, ready to freshen up before dinner.

The tour starts with a drive along the north coast, with stops at places like Miradouro de Santa Iria for sweeping ocean views! Then, it’s onto the Gorreana tea plantation, which is one of the only tea plantations in Europe. Walking through the fields was a really cool and unexpected experience for us! 

Once you reach Furnas, things get even more interesting. At Lagoa das Furnas, you can actually see the famous “cozido” stew being cooked underground using volcanic heat. It’s such a unique tradition, and then you get to sit down and eat it for lunch, which makes it even better!

The afternoon is just as good. You’ll explore the geothermal area in the village itself, see bubbling hot springs, and you’ll have the option to visit Terra Nostra Park and relax in the warm thermal pool surrounded by lush gardens. If you want to see a completely different side of São Miguel, this is easily one of the best ways to do it!

Full day – Option 2: See the best of São Miguel’s west

We loved this São Miguel west tour because it was such a fun way to explore the island without having to plan a thing or worry about transport. It’s an awesome choice if it’s your first time in the Azores, because you get so much variety packed into one day! 

Like with the Furnas Valley tour, you’ll be picked up at or just before 9 am, and dropped off again at about 5 pm. It’s a full-day adventure, during which you’ll get to visit beautiful clifftop viewpoints and gaze at beautiful crater lakes. We also loved the fact that we got to visit a lot of tucked-away spots that we definitely would have missed on our own.

Of course, Sete Cidades was the standout! Seeing Lagoa Azul and Lagoa Verde from viewpoints like Boca do Inferno and Vista do Rei was even more impressive than we had imagined. The stop in Mosteiros was another highlight, and we loved seeing the volcanic coastline up close.

Another thing that really made the experience for us was our local guide. Daniel was so knowledgeable and passionate about the island – and no, I’m not just bigging him up because we have the same name! Lunch was a nice bonus too, as we got a proper local meal involving fresh fish, rather than just a quick snack or a packed lunch. 

Overall, we think this is the perfect introduction to São Miguel, especially if you want to see the island’s most iconic spots without the stress of driving! And we’re not the only ones who love it, as it has over 1,700 glowing reviews!

Dinner – Restaurante Bom Pesqueiro

After a full day of exploring São Miguel, head to Restaurante Bom Pesqueiro for dinner. It’s set right on the marina at Portas do Mar, so it’s a 10 to 15-minute walk from most central hotels, or a quick taxi if you’re feeling tired after the tour. Hey, we won’t judge!

This is one of the most-reviewed restaurants in the entire Azores, and the praise is very consistent, which says a lot! The location is a big part of the appeal, and with large windows and marina-facing tables, the views here at golden hour and sunset are really pretty.

As you’d expect, seafood is the thing to order here. The grilled fish of the day is the classic choice, and it’s all about letting the quality of the Atlantic catch shine. The grilled octopus is another standout, and the tuna tartare makes a light, fresh starter. If rockfish is available, that’s also well worth ordering, as it’s a local Atlantic species and usually prepared very simply.

Save room for dessert, too, because the chocolate mousse is beautifully rich and decadent! Our waiter recommended it and, as a huge sweet tooth, I certainly didn’t need telling twice.

Restaurante Bom Pesqueiro is open daily from 6 pm to 10 pm. Both tours get back at around 5 pm, so we suggest booking a table for around 7:30 pm, since this place is popular. That should give you enough time to freshen up and head to the restaurant without having to rush. Reservations are made via The Fork platform!

Evening – Go for a sunset stroll along the marina

After dinner, step straight out of Bom Pesqueiro and onto the marina promenade. The waterfront at Portas do Mar is one of the nicest places in Ponta Delgada for an evening walk, so that’s what we’re doing tonight. The harbor is really scenic, so this is the perfect way to decompress after spending the day out on the island.

The promenade runs along the full length of the marina and connects back towards Portas da Cidade and the Old Town, so you can make the walk as short or as long as you like. We think it’s a lovely way to enjoy the city at night without committing to another big activity.

And if a nightcap appeals, there are a few bars and cafés dotted along the waterfront! Baía dos Anjos is our favorite spot right on the promenade, with marina views and a nice atmosphere.

Day 3

Breakfast – Apito Dourado 

Start your final morning in Ponta Delgada at Apito Dourado, a much-loved local breakfast spot tucked just a short walk from the city center. It’s friendly and very fairly priced – what more could you ask for?

This is more of an islanders’ spot than a touristy café, and we felt so welcome here! The staff are really kind, and they speak great English. Service is quick, too, which is what you want when you’ve got a tour to meet.

Apito Dourado opens at 6:30 am Monday to Thursday and Saturday, and the whale watching tour starts at 8:30 am, so you should have plenty of time to eat if your tour is on one of these days. However, it only opens at 9 am on Friday and is closed on Sunday, so you’ll want to grab something at your hotel or stock up the night before if your final day falls then.

The marina meeting point for the whale watching tour is about an 8-minute walk away, heading east along the seafront, so it’s a super convenient breakfast stop before your morning adventure. We got here at about 7:45 am and had plenty of time.

Morning – Go whale watching 

If you’ve read any of our blogs before, you might know that we’re a little crazy about whales. And the Azores is one of the best places in Europe to see whales because it sits right along major migration routes, so you really can’t pass up the chance to go whale watching while you’re here! 

We booked this tour because it’s the top-rated whale-watching experience in Ponta Delgada, and it didn’t disappoint. There’s no hotel pickup available, but that’s no problem as the meeting point is at the Ponta Delgada marina, just a 5-10-minute walk from the Old Town.

For this experience, there are two boat options, so you can just pick the one that suits you best! The catamaran is the more relaxed choice, offering a smooth and stable ride with plenty of space to move around. On the other hand, the speedboat is much faster-paced and more adventurous, so it’s a good choice if you’re looking for a bit of excitement. 

Whichever option you book, we recommend choosing the earlier start time. That’s 9 am for the catamaran cruise or 8:30 am for the speedboat ride. Either way, you’ll be finished up by midday, ready for lunch.

Both versions of the tour are led by experienced guides and marine biologists, which adds a ton of value! As well as spotting all kinds of whales and dolphins, you’ll also learn a lot about the different species and conservation efforts in the region.

Lunch – Anfiteatro

After whale watching, head straight to Anfiteatro for lunch. It’s located right on the marina, so you won’t need to go anywhere after getting off the boat – phew! 

This is one of the most atmospheric lunch spots in Ponta Delgada, especially on a clear day. The floor-to-ceiling windows look right out over the water, so you can keep the ocean theme of the morning going!

Anfiteatro is also a teaching restaurant for Ponta Delgada’s hospitality school, so it’s definitely a bit more interesting than your average marina restaurant. The service is super attentive, and the kitchen really punches above its price point. Who doesn’t love a bargain?

The shrimp bao was our favorite dish here, but the fish soup is also a great choice after a morning at sea. We also ordered the ceviche, and it was super fresh, making good use of the island’s Atlantic catch.

Walk-ins are usually fine at lunch time, but you can make a reservation if you want to be safe. Lunch runs from Tuesday to Saturday, from 12 pm to 2:30 pm. If your final day is a Sunday or Monday, there are plenty of other restaurants along the marina, so take a stroll and see what tickles your fancy –Ramen Açores is a well-rated option that’s open Sunday and Monday!

Afternoon – Option 1: Hike to the Crater Lake at Lagoa do Fogo

If you still have some energy after whale watching, Lagoa do Fogo is one of the best hikes on São Miguel! The trail starts at a gorgeous viewpoint and then takes you down to a pristine lake, and we love it because it feels so raw and untouched.

To get to the trailhead, you’ll need to drive yourself or take a cab. It’s about a 30-minute drive from Ponta Delgada to Miradouro da Lagoa do Fogo, and if you’re driving yourself, don’t worry because the journey is really straightforward. The road climbs up through dense forest before suddenly opening out at the crater viewpoint, so you enjoy great views from the get-go!

Even if you don’t hike down, the view from the top is worth the trip on its own. On a clear day, you can see right across the island! But if the weather is behaving, we definitely recommend heading down to the lake. The trail is well-marked, although it does get steep in sections, so proper shoes are a must.

The full hike is around 5 km (3 miles) out and back, and it takes roughly 1.5 to 2 hours to complete with stops. And of course, you’ll want to allow some time to relax at the bottom and enjoy the peaceful, unspoiled lake before you head back up again.

Just bring plenty of water, a waterproof layer, and don’t leave it too late in the day to go. The weather can change quickly at this altitude, and clouds often roll in as the day goes on.

Afternoon – Option 2: Relax and spend the afternoon in the city 

If you fancy taking it a bit easier on your final afternoon, then you can always stay in Ponta Delgada and enjoy the city at a slower pace! After a morning out on the water, this is a lovely way to relax and wind down before your final dinner.

• Jardim Botânico José do Canto – This beautiful 19th-century botanical garden is just a short walk from the city center, and we think it’s one of the most underrated spots in Ponta Delgada! It’s peaceful and filled with rare and exotic plants that have been brought to the island from all over the world. Plus, it’s free to enter!

• Explore Gruta do Carvão – This volcanic lava tube cave system sits right inside the city, which is pretty cool if you ask us! Guided visits run regularly, and it’s a really interesting way to learn more about São Miguel’s volcanic origins from the inside.

• Relax in a spa – If you truly want to wind down, why not book a treatment or spa session in the city? SPA VITAL and the spa at Hotel Marina Atlântico are both good options in town, with pools and full treatment menus that save you from driving all the way to Furnas.

• Wander the Old Town and do some final shopping – This is your last chance to browse the independent shops around Rua Hintze Ribeiro and Mercado da Graça! In particular, look out for Azorean tea, pineapple products, and regional ceramics to take home.

Dinner – Louvre Michaelense

For your final dinner in Ponta Delgada, head to Louvre Michaelense. This place has been part of the city since 1904, so it’s the perfect place for a send-off meal. It’s housed in a grand historic building right in the heart of the Old Town, and it feels very warm and welcoming. 

The restaurant is around a 10 to 15-minute walk from the marina, or a short taxi ride if you’re coming straight from an afternoon activity. The dishes on the menu take classic Azorean ingredients and prepare them with French techniques. 

As for what to eat, we loved the seafood arancini as a starter, and the tuna tataki is another standout if you want something fresh and light. For mains, the waiter recommended either the shrimp pasta or the seafood casserole, and he turned out to be bang on the money! However, they also have a really yummy braised beef risotto if you’ve had enough of fish and seafood by now.

And whatever you do, save room for the chocolate cake! It’s locally known as one of the best desserts in the city, so it would be rude not to, really.

Be sure to make a reservation for this spot! Louvre Michaelense is closed on Wednesdays, but otherwise dinner usually runs from 5:30 pm to 10:30 pm. If your last night happens to be a Wednesday, no worries, because Gastronomo is open then. It’s not as fancy, but it’s still a top-rated spot that serves amazing local seafood, and it’s open for dinner between 7:30 pm and 9:30 pm Tuesday through Saturday. 

Evening – Toast to your trip with a view

For one final drink in Ponta Delgada, head to the rooftop bar at Octant Hotel. It sits right on the marina, so the views over the Atlantic are absolutely gorgeous. We think it’s the perfect place to end your trip! 

The bar is about a 10 to 15-minute walk from Louvre Michaelense, and the route takes you through the Old Town and along the seafront for a nice stroll. Once you arrive, the bar itself is set on an open-air rooftop terrace above the pool, so you’ve got the ocean in front of you and the city lights behind – what more could you want on your last night in Ponta Delgada?

Another thing we really appreciated about this place is that the cocktails are based on Azorean ingredients. There’s a seaweed-infused gin and tonic, which we think is a must if you’re partial to a G&T, or you can never go wrong with some local vinho verde. Cheers!

Where to Stay in Ponta Delgada

Now that you know how to spend your time in Ponta Delgada, you just need a great place to stay! We suggest staying in the center of town to make life easier, especially if you’re planning lots of fun activities. Staying centrally means you’ll be in the right place for tour pick-ups, and you’ll have great restaurants and interesting architecture right on your doorstep. Octant Ponta Delgada – $$$

If you’re looking to treat yourself a bit, Octant Ponta Delgada is easily one of the most luxurious options on the island. It sits right on the waterfront, so you get those amazing ocean views pretty much everywhere, from your room to the pool area.

The rooms are modern and spacious, with a clean, minimal design that lets the views do most of the talking. It feels polished without being over the top, which we really like! One of the highlights here is the outdoor pool overlooking the sea, plus there’s a spa, and the on-site restaurant is also a great option for dinner if you don’t feel like heading back out in the evening.

Hotel Do Colegio – $$ 

We think that Hotel Do Colegio is the perfect mid-range option in the heart of Ponta Delgada. If location is high on your list, it doesn’t get much better than this! You’re in the historic center, so you can walk pretty much everywhere, from the marina to restaurants and the main sights.

The building itself is part of the charm. It’s set in a 19th-century former school and conservatory, and the interiors still reflect that history in a subtle way. The rooms are spacious and recently updated, so you get a nice mix of character and comfort without it feeling dated. There’s also a small pool, which is a nice bonus, especially after a day out exploring the island.

Azoris Royal Garden – $ 

Azoris Royal Garden is one of those places that feels like a bit of a hidden gem. It’s technically a 4-star hotel, but the prices are often much more budget-friendly than you’d expect, which makes it a great value for what you get!

The rooms were renovated recently, so everything feels modern, clean, and comfortable without trying too hard. It’s not ultra-luxury, but it’s definitely a step up from your typical budget stay.

One of the standout features here is the outdoor pool and garden area. It’s a really nice space to relax after a day of exploring, with plenty of loungers and a calm, laid-back vibe. There’s also an indoor pool, spa, and even a gym, so you’ll have everything you need.
