Hamburg is one of Europe’s most important port cities, and its waterfront has shaped the city for centuries. The harbor, canals, and rivers aren’t just scenic features – they played a huge role in Hamburg’s growth as a major trading hub and still influence the layout of the city today. Because of this, many of the most interesting neighborhoods sit close to the water, whether that’s along the historic canals or in the modern harbor district.

The good news is that Hamburg is a very easy city to get around. The public transportation network is excellent, with U-Bahn and S-Bahn trains connecting most parts of the city quickly and reliably. Then, once you arrive in a neighborhood, it’s usually very walkable! Many of the main sights sit close together, so it’s easy to explore on foot.

Each area of Hamburg has its own personality. The City Center is packed with historic landmarks and shopping streets, while HafenCity and Speicherstadt offer modern architecture and waterfront views. Hamburg’s City Center is the best place to stay if it’s your first time visiting the city, and it’s where we stayed on our first visit. This area is made up of Altstadt and Neustadt, two historic districts that sit right at the heart of Hamburg. The architecture here feels grand and polished, with elegant buildings and plenty of upscale hotels. It’s also one of the most convenient places to stay because most of the city’s main sights are within walking distance. 

One of the standout landmarks is Hamburg Rathaus, the city’s impressive neo-Renaissance town hall that dominates the main square. It’s a beautiful building both inside and out, and guided tours run regularly if you want to see the ornate interior. Just a short walk away, you’ll also find the St. Nikolai Memorial, a striking church tower that now serves as a memorial to the destruction of World War II.

The City Center is also the hub for shopping in Hamburg. Streets like Mönckebergstraße are lined with major stores, boutiques, and department stores, making them among the busiest retail areas in the city. You’re also close to the waterfront here, so it’s easy to walk toward the canals or down to the harbor area.

Hamburg Marriott Hotel – $$$

If Hamburg Marriott Hotel is fully booked, TORTUE Hamburg is another fantastic option in the heart of the city center near Jungfernstieg and the main shopping streets. The hotel offers beautifully designed rooms and a lovely French-style courtyard.

Steigenberger Hotel Hamburg is another great alternative located along one of Hamburg’s canals close to the harbor and the historic center. The property offers elegant rooms and lovely waterfront views.

Renaissance Hamburg Hotel – $$

We stayed at the Renaissance Hamburg Hotel, a stylish option located in a historic building in the Neustadt district. The property sits right in the city center, so it was super easy to walk to Hamburg Rathaus, the shopping streets, and many of the city’s main attractions. Honestly, we couldn’t have asked for a better location. 

Our room was modern and comfortable, with a sleek design and plenty of space. There’s also a restaurant and bar on site, which was the perfect place to unwind after a day of sightseeing—especially with their great signature cocktails. Rooms typically start from around €230 per night during the warmer months.

Another one of our top choices, SIDE, Hamburg is another excellent option located close to the city center and the shopping streets of Neustadt. The hotel offers stylish modern rooms and a spa with a pool and sauna.

Lindner Hotel Hamburg am Michel is also worth considering if you prefer a hotel located near the famous St. Michael’s Church. The property offers spacious rooms and a comfortable atmosphere within walking distance of many major sights.

Novotel Hamburg Central Station – $$

Novotel Hamburg Central Station is a convenient and comfortable option located close to Hamburg’s main train station. This makes it a great base if you’re arriving by train or planning day trips to other parts of Germany!

The rooms are modern and functional, with plenty of space and a clean, contemporary design. There’s also an on-site restaurant and family-friendly facilities, which make this hotel a solid choice for travelers visiting Hamburg with kids. Rooms typically start from around €180 per night during the warmer months.

If Novotel Hamburg Central Station is sold out for your dates, Premier Inn Hamburg City Centre is another affordable and reliable option. The hotel offers comfortable rooms and excellent value for money, and it’s located close to the train station and within walking distance of the city center. 

Hotel Hafen Hamburg is also a great alternative, located near the harbor and within easy reach of the city center. The property features traditional rooms and a rooftop bar with fantastic views over the port – pretty amazing at this price point! 

HafenCity & Speicherstadt 

BEST FOR A MODERN, WATERFRONT STAY

HafenCity and Speicherstadt sit along Hamburg’s historic harbor and offer one of the most distinctive places to stay in the city. This area reflects Hamburg’s maritime history, but it also shows how the city has reinvented parts of its waterfront in recent years. The two districts sit side by side, with Speicherstadt made up of striking red-brick warehouses and HafenCity representing Hamburg’s modern redevelopment along the harbor.

Speicherstadt is the older part of the district and is the world’s largest warehouse complex. The buildings date back to the late 19th century and stand on timber foundations above narrow canals. Today, many of these former warehouses house museums and galleries, and we really enjoyed exploring them. 

One of the most popular places to visit here is Miniatur Wunderland, the world’s largest model railway exhibition and one of Hamburg’s most famous attractions. From there, we walked to the International Maritime Museum, which explores the city’s long relationship with the sea.

Just next door, HafenCity feels much more modern, with sleek architecture and waterfront promenades. The standout landmark here is the Elbphilharmonie, a striking concert hall built on top of an old warehouse that has quickly become one of Hamburg’s most recognizable buildings. We think that staying in this area is a great idea if you love modern art and culture! 

JUFA Hotel Hamburg HafenCity – $$$ 

JUFA Hotel Hamburg HafenCity is a modern, family-friendly hotel right in the heart of Hamburg’s waterfront district. The property sits in a quiet part of HafenCity, within walking distance of the Elbphilharmonie and many of the nearby museums.

The rooms are spacious and modern, and the hotel is especially popular with families thanks to its relaxed atmosphere and practical layout. There’s also a kids’ play area and a restaurant on-site, and you can opt to include breakfast for extra ease. Rooms here typically start at around €250 per night during the warmer months, and family rooms are available.

The Westin Hamburg Elbphilharmonie – $$

The Westin Hamburg Elbphilharmonie is easily one of the most unique places to stay in Hamburg. The hotel sits inside the famous Elbphilharmonie concert hall, which rises above the harbor and has become a symbol of the city. It’s a stunning, modern building with huge windows that offer amazing views of the Elbe River and the surrounding port.

AMERON Hamburg Hotel Speicherstadt is another fantastic option located right inside the historic warehouse district along one of the canals. The hotel offers stylish rooms inspired by the building’s maritime history and beautiful views over the surrounding waterways.

Holiday Inn – Hamburg – HafenCity- $ 

Holiday Inn – Hamburg – HafenCity is a practical, budget-friendly option located in the modern HafenCity district. But even though it’s affordable, it’s still clean, modern, and comfortable, with plenty of family-friendly facilities. 

We also think the location is excellent for this price point. The property sits within walking distance of several museums and the waterfront promenade, making it a convenient base for exploring this newer part of Hamburg. You’ve also got two subway stations right nearby, so it’s easy to travel to other parts of the city as well. Prices here usually start at around €170 per night during the warmer months.

If Holiday Inn – Hamburg – HafenCity is unavailable, 25hours Hotel Hamburg HafenCity is another great option located right in the heart of the waterfront district. The hotel features bold nautical-inspired design and quirky interiors that reflect Hamburg’s maritime history.

St Pauli 

BEST FOR NIGHTLIFE

• Can be noisy late into the night
• Not the best choice for travelers looking for a quiet stay

St. Pauli is Hamburg’s most famous entertainment district and the place to stay if you want to experience the city’s nightlife scene. The neighborhood is centered around the Reeperbahn, a lively street packed with neon signs, clubs, bars, theaters, and music venues. It’s one of the most famous nightlife streets in Europe and has a reputation that’s a bit edgy, which is exactly what gives the area its character. We had so many fun nights out here! 

The Reeperbahn has long been connected to Hamburg’s music history. In fact, The Beatles performed in several clubs here during the early 1960s before they became internationally famous. Today, the area still attracts visitors who want to experience Hamburg after dark, with everything from live music venues to late-night bars.

During the daytime, though, St. Pauli feels much more relaxed. We loved walking along the waterfront and watching the boats coming and going at the nearby Landungsbrücken harbor piers, and exploring the Old Elbe Tunnel, a historic pedestrian tunnel that runs beneath the river. On Sunday mornings, the lively Fischmarkt is another classic Hamburg experience, where locals gather for seafood and music. 

East Hotel Hamburg – $$$ 

East Hotel Hamburg is one of the most stylish places to stay in the St. Pauli district. The hotel sits inside a former iron foundry building near the Reeperbahn, which gives the property a very distinctive industrial-chic atmosphere.

The rooms are sleek and modern, and the hotel is well known for its lively restaurant and bar scene. It’s a great choice if you want to stay somewhere trendy while still being close to Hamburg’s nightlife. Rooms here typically start at around €280 per night during the warmer months.

If east Hotel Hamburg is fully booked, Empire Riverside Hotel is another excellent option located right along the waterfront near St. Pauli’s harbor area. The hotel offers modern rooms and a famous rooftop bar with incredible views over the port, plus a sleek spa with cutting-edge saunas and therapy pools.

Prize by Radisson – $$

Prize by Radisson is a modern option located close to the Reeperbahn and the harbor. The hotel’s location makes it easy to reach both St. Pauli’s nightlife and the nearby waterfront attractions.

The rooms are simple but stylish, with a futuristic, colorful design and comfortable beds. It’s a solid option if you want a contemporary hotel that’s well located without the higher price tag of some nearby properties. Rooms typically start from around €190 per night during the warmer months.

In this same neighborhood, Hotel Hafen Hamburg is another great option located near the Landungsbrücken harbor piers and within walking distance of the Reeperbahn. The hotel offers classic rooms and a rooftop terrace with great views over the port.

ARCOTEL Onyx Hamburg is also worth checking out if you prefer a hotel located directly on the Reeperbahn itself. The property offers sleek rooms and a very central location in the heart of the nightlife district.

Cityhotel Monopol – $

Cityhotel Monopol is a budget-friendly option located directly on the Reeperbahn. The location makes it perfect if you want to stay right in the middle of St. Pauli’s nightlife scene!

The rooms are simple but comfortable, with soundproofing so that you can’t hear the noise from the street below. But then, as soon as you step outside your door, you’ll have the neighborhood’s best bars and restaurants right there! We think this is a very convenient choice if you’re planning to spend most of your time here enjoying Hamburg after dark. Prices here usually start at around €120 per night.

If Cityhotel Monopol is unavailable for your travel dates, Pyjama Park St Pauli Hotel und Hostel is another affordable option located right in the heart of the Reeperbahn area. The property offers colorful rooms and a fun, youthful atmosphere, so it’s a great choice if you’re looking to party.

St. Joseph Hotel Hamburg is also a good backup, located just a short walk from the nightlife district. This 1960s-themed hotel offers family rooms and dorms, so it’s ideal for groups, and it’s set in a slightly quieter location, but it’s still close to the action.

St. Georg

BEST FOR BUDGET TRAVELERS & CONVENIENCE

• Parts of the neighborhood can feel a little rough around the edges
• Not as polished as some of Hamburg’s other areas

St. Georg is one of the most convenient places to stay in Hamburg, especially if you’re arriving by train or planning to explore the city using public transportation. The neighborhood sits right next to Hamburg Central Station, so it’s super easy to reach from the airport and other parts of Germany. And while areas around major train stations tend to feel industrial or run down, St. Georg is lively with its own distinct personality.

In fact, the area is known for its multicultural atmosphere and buzzing street life. You’ll find restaurants serving cuisine from all over the world, along with independent cafes and casual bars. St. Georg is also home to one of Hamburg’s most prominent LGBTQ+ communities, particularly around Lange Reihe, a street filled with boutiques and nightlife spots.

One of the biggest highlights nearby is the Outer Alster Lake. This beautiful stretch of water sits just a short walk away and is a popular place for walking and cycling by the waterfront. Many visitors enjoy grabbing a coffee or a picnic and spending time along the lakeside paths.

Because of its central location and wide range of accommodation options, St. Georg works particularly well for travelers on a budget or anyone looking for a convenient base with easy transport connections.

Aussen Alster Hotel – $$$

Aussen Alster Hotel is a charming boutique hotel located right by the shores of the Outer Alster Lake. The property sits in a peaceful spot in St. Georg, offering lovely views of the water while still being within walking distance of Hamburg Central Station.

The rooms are elegant and comfortable, with classic decor that fits well with the historic building. We love the breakfast area because it overlooks the lake, so what better way to start the day before heading out to explore? Rooms here typically start at around €270 per night during the warmer months.

Another one of our favorite stays, Hotel Wedina an der Alster is another beautiful option located just a short walk from the lake in a quiet part of St. Georg. The hotel offers stylish rooms spread across several historic townhouses and has a lovely garden courtyard.

Hotel Atlantic Hamburg is also a fantastic alternative located directly on the shores of the Outer Alster Lake. The hotel is known for its grand historic architecture and elegant rooms with classic design.

Le Méridien Hamburg – $$

Le Méridien Hamburg is a sophisticated hotel located right along the shores of the Outer Alster Lake. The property has fantastic lake views and sits just a short walk from Hamburg Central Station and the lively streets of St. Georg.

If Le Méridien Hamburg is fully booked, The George Hamburg is another stylish option located in St. Georg, close to the lake and the neighborhood’s restaurants. The hotel features elegant rooms and a rooftop with views over the city.

Reichshof Hotel Hamburg is also worth considering if you prefer a historic hotel located directly across from Hamburg Central Station. The property offers beautifully restored interiors and a wonderful afternoon tea experience.

CAB20 – $

CAB20 is one of the most affordable places to stay in Hamburg and is located just a short walk from Hamburg Central Station. The property has compact sleeping cabins rather than traditional hotel rooms, which helps keep prices low while still providing a comfortable place to stay.

The design is modern and minimal, and there are shared lounge areas where guests can relax or work. It’s a great option for solo travelers or anyone looking for a simple, budget-friendly base in a very convenient location. Prices here usually start at around €80 per night.

If you want a bit more space, Stay! Hotel Boardinghouse is another affordable option located near Hamburg Central Station with easy access to public transport. The hotel offers modern rooms and apartment-style accommodation with small kitchenettes.

Hotel Terminus am Hauptbahnhof & ZOB is also a good alternative, located very close to the train station and bus terminal. The rooms here are simple and practical, and the property makes a practical base for exploring Hamburg on a budget.

Rotherbaum is one of Hamburg’s most elegant neighborhoods and a fantastic choice if you’re looking for a more upscale place to stay. The district sits along the shores of the Outer Alster Lake, which gives the area a calm and refined atmosphere compared to the busier parts of the city. The historic buildings and grand villas give Rotherbaum a polished feel that we really enjoyed while exploring this area. 

The neighborhood is also known for its cultural attractions. The University of Hamburg is located here, which brings a lively student presence to the area. Nearby, you’ll also find the Museum am Rothenbaum – Kulturen und Künste der Welt (MARKK), which is one of Germany’s largest ethnology museums.

One of the biggest highlights of staying in Rotherbaum is the proximity to the Outer Alster Lake. The lakeside paths are popular with locals who come here to walk and cycle, or simply enjoy the scenery. On sunny days, you’ll often see people sailing or relaxing along the waterfront.

Even though Rotherbaum feels more residential than other areas, it’s still very well connected. The Dammtor train station sits nearby, making it easy to reach the city center and other parts of Hamburg. If you’re looking for a polished neighborhood with beautiful surroundings and luxury hotels, Rotherbaum is a great choice.

The Fontenay Hamburg – $$$

The Fontenay Hamburg is one of the most luxurious hotels in the city and sits right on the shores of the Outer Alster Lake. The building itself is very striking, with a curved modern design that looks amazing against the surrounding waterfront setting.

The rooms are super chic, with tasteful, neutral decor and large windows and balconies that overlook the lake. The hotel also has a spa and several restaurants with fantastic views across the water. My favorite part, though, is the beautiful indoor pool, which is surrounded by floor-to-ceiling windows, so you can still enjoy great views as you swim. If you’re looking for a high-end stay in Hamburg, this hotel is hard to beat!

If The Fontenay Hamburg is fully booked, RetroPop Designerzimmern Nahe Alster & City is another stylish option located near the lake and within easy reach of the city center. The property has colorful rooms with a playful retro aesthetic, so it’s a fun and quirky place to stay.

We also think that Stilwerk Hotel Heimhude is a great alternative, located in a quiet residential street close to the Alster Lake. The hotel offers boutique-style rooms with modern design and a relaxed atmosphere.

If Hotel Bellmoor im Dammtorpalais is sold out for your travel dates, Hotel Vorbach is another good option located close to the university and the Alster Lake. The hotel houses traditional rooms in a historic building with plenty of character, and it boasts a super quiet location.

Hotel am Rothenbaum is also worth considering if you prefer a smaller hotel near the university district. It’s a low-key property, but it offers comfortable rooms and a quiet setting.
