The Central Loire Valley, centered around the charming towns of Amboise, Blois, and Chenonceaux, is the heart of the region and home to the chateaus you’ve probably seen in pictures. We’re talking about the absolute icons, like the magnificent Château de Chambord with its mind-boggling double-helix staircase, the elegant Château de Chenonceau arching gracefully over the River Cher, and the historic Château d’Amboise, where Leonardo da Vinci spent his final years at the nearby Clos Lucé.

What we love most about this area is how easy it is to explore. The big-name chateaus are all within a relatively short drive of each other, so you can tick off your must-see list without having to spend all day in the car. It’s the perfect base to experience the Loire Valley at its best.

The towns themselves are also part of the magic, with cobblestone streets, buzzing local markets, and riverside cafes that practically beg you to slow down and have a glass of wine (or two!). It really is the quintessential Loire Valley experience, and honestly, it’s the best place to start if you’ve never been to the region before. 

Relais & Château Louise de La Vallière – $$$ 

If you’re looking for the ultimate luxury escape, this is it. The Relais & Châteaux Louise de La Vallière is an adults-only, 5-star hotel that feels like stepping into a 17th-century dream. We were blown away by the interiors, designed by the famous Jacques Garcia, which are lavish, theatrical, and incredibly romantic. The chateau is also set in an ancient forest, so it feels completely private and secluded.

What we love most is the attention to detail. Every element (the gourmet restaurant, the champagne at breakfast, the stunning spa) is thoughtfully designed to make you feel like royalty. It’s a truly special-occasion kind of place, perfect for a romantic getaway or a big celebration. Rates typically start from around €450 to €1,200+ per night, depending on the season and suite.

Château de Noizay – $$$

For a slightly more intimate but equally luxurious stay, the Château de Noizay is a fantastic choice. This 16th-century chateau is set in a 24-hectare park in the heart of the Vouvray wine region, making it a perfect base for wine lovers. The rooms are beautifully decorated with antique furniture, and some of the ground-floor rooms even have their own private gardens.

We love the peaceful, elegant atmosphere here. It feels like a real country retreat, but you’re still just a short drive from Amboise and Tours. The on-site restaurant is excellent, and the heated outdoor pool is the perfect place to relax after a day of wine tasting. It’s a classic, sophisticated chateau experience. Château de Perreux, The Originals Collection – $$$ 

The Château de Perreux offers historic charm with a modern twist, located just outside Amboise. The chateau itself dates back to 1701, but the rooms have been beautifully updated with a fresh, contemporary feel that still respects the château’s character. 

What really made the stay memorable for us, though, was the atmosphere. The host is incredibly welcoming, and the traditional French breakfast was a highlight each morning. There’s also a heated pool (always a win) and lovely gardens with hammocks and lounge chairs, perfect for slowing down and soaking up the fairytale surroundings. 

Rates typically start from around €150 to €350+ per night, which is a great value for such a unique property. 

Château des Arpentis – $$ 

If you’re looking for a classic, romantic château experience, the Château des Arpentis is a drop-dead gorgeous property with serious fairytale charm. The rooms are decorated in a traditional French style, with four-poster beds, wood-beamed ceilings, and beautiful toile du jouy fabric on the walls. It feels like you’ve stepped back in time, which is exactly what you’d want from a stay in the Loire Valley! 

The chateau itself is set in a vast private park, and it really does feel like your own private country estate. There’s a large outdoor pool, a cozy salon with a fireplace, and even a communal kitchen if you want to prepare your own meals.  Rates for this hotel typically start from around €190 to €350+ per night.

Château de Chissay – $ 

For a more budget-friendly stay in the Loire Valley, the Château de Chissay is definitely worth looking into. This former fortified castle dates back to the 12th century, and it’s packed with historic details, including a 13th-century keep and Renaissance-era towers. The rooms are furnished in a traditional 18th-century style, and there are no TVs, which really adds to the feeling of stepping back in time.

If you love the idea of having a lively city as your home base, the area around Tours and Western Touraine is the perfect place to stay. 

Tours is actually the largest city in the Loire Valley, and it’s a fantastic hub for exploring the region. We love this area because it offers the best of both worlds: you get the energy, restaurants, and convenience of a city, but you’re just a short drive away from some of the most beautiful countryside and castles in France.

When you do venture out of the city, you’ll be immediately surrounded by rolling vineyards and stunning chateaus. Two of our absolute favorites in this area are the incredible Château de Villandry, with its world-famous Renaissance gardens, and the impossibly romantic Château d’Azay-le-Rideau, which seems to float on the water. 

This area offers the perfect setup for travelers who want to spend their days exploring castles and their evenings unwinding in a vibrant (and well-preserved) medieval French city. Our ideal itinerary? Wander through a morning market in Tours, jump in the car, and spend the afternoon at a magnificent chateau, and head back in time for a late dinner reservation before a nightcap at the hotel. Chef’s kiss!

Domaine de la Tortinière – $$$

Domaine de la Tortinière is a truly elegant and serene retreat, set in a 19th-century neo-renaissance chateau overlooking the Indre Valley. What really stood out to us was the setting—the views are incredible, and the park has such a calm, romantic feel that it’s hard to leave. That same attention to detail carries through to the refined rooms, and even dinner at Aurore feels like a highlight of the stay.

The vibe is also incredibly relaxed. You can spend your afternoon lounging by the outdoor pool, playing tennis, or even taking a boat out on the river. It feels a world away from the hustle and bustle of Tours, but you’re just 15 minutes from the city center if you want to dip back in for an evening out!

Rates typically start from around €200 to €335+ per night, but make sure to snap up your room quickly because this place fills up during peak seasons!

Château D’artigny – $$ 

Built in the glamorous Belle Époque style by the famous perfumer François Coty, Château D’artigny is all about grandeur and romance. The architecture alone is enough to impress, but the sweeping views over the Indre Valley really take it to the next level.

What we love about this hotel is that there’s plenty to do without ever leaving the grounds, and its location near Tours makes it easy to explore nearby châteaux, too. As a guest, you’ll have access to the spa facilities (what a treat!), the tennis courts, and an on-site restaurant that serves up beautifully prepared regional dishes. There’s also a bar, which is the perfect spot for a pre-dinner cocktail. 

Expect prices to start around €125 and climb to €290+ per night, which is a fantastic value for such a grand estate.

Château De Beauvois – $ 

If you’ve ever dreamed of staying in a 15th-century castle that was once a favorite of King Louis XIII, Château De Beauvois is the place for you. This place is steeped in history, and we were so impressed by the lavish, historic interiors. Think grand fireplaces, ornate paintings, and beautiful tapestry beds. 

What we loved most, though, was the incredible wine cellar, which is one of the most prestigious in the region and is located in a cave carved out of the rock (so cool!). The heated outdoor pool is another huge plus. 

All in all, this is a fantastic choice for history buffs, wine lovers, and anyone who wants that classic château experience without the sky-high price tag. Rates typically start from around €120 to €350+ per night, depending on the season and room type.

Château Belmont Tours by The Crest Collection  – $ 

For a more modern stay that still has a touch of château magic, the Château Belmont Tours is a great option. The hotel is split between a historic 17th-century building and a contemporary wing, and it’s set in a large, peaceful park right in the city of Tours (so you’re never far from a wine bar or market). 

Personally, we loved the wellness area, which has a heated indoor pool, hammam, and sauna, which was definitely appreciated after a full day of sightseeing! This spot really is a great pick if you want a bit more comfort and convenience without giving up that château feel. Prices usually begin at around €100 per night and can go up to €300+ for higher-end rooms. 

Saumur, Chinon & the Loire Wine Region 

BEST FOR WINERIES & HISTORY

Pros 

• Heart of the Loire Valley wine country
• Stunning medieval towns and fortresses
• Fewer crowds than the central region

Cons 

• Chateaus are more spread out
• Requires more driving to get between sites
• Less of a central “hub” city

If your ideal trip involves sipping world-class wine in a centuries-old cellar, wandering through medieval streets, and ending the day in a château that feels straight out of a storybook, this is the spot to base yourself during your trip to the Loire Valley. 

The area around Saumur and Chinon is the heart of the Loire Valley’s wine country, best known for its excellent Cabernet Franc and crisp Chenin Blanc. Compared to the central Loire, it feels a little more rugged and under the radar. But that’s exactly why we fell in love with it! 

Yes, there are a lot of wineries to explore (you’ll definitely want to book a few tastings). But there’s plenty of history and attractions here, too! For example, the imposing Fortress of Chinon is where Joan of Arc met Charles VII, and the hilltop Château de Saumur offers incredible views over the river. You’re also in a great location for exploring the wider region, with easy access to both the Loire and Vienne river valleys, countless family-run wineries, and a string of charming villages all just a short drive away.

So if you’re after something a little less polished and a bit more authentic, Saumur, Chinon, and the Loire Wine Region deliver in the best possible way.

Château La Comtesse de Loire & Spa – $$$

For a romantic and luxurious stay, the Château La Comtesse de Loire & Spa is an excellent choice in the heart of Saumur. This elegant 19th-century chateau has a serene, private feel, and we were so impressed with the beautiful wooded park and the spa. 

What really stands out about this hotel is its location. It’s in a quiet, peaceful spot, but you’re still just a short walk from the center of Saumur; perfect if you’re looking for a castle stay that’s not completely cut off from all the good stuff (like local restaurants, cafes, and wine bars). Rates typically start from around €145 to €385+ per night, well worth it for such a beautiful location. 

Chateau De Rochecotte – $$$ 

Once the private estate of the Duchesse de Dino, the Chateau De Rochecotte is a magnificent Italian-style villa located near Saumur. We were especially captivated by the huge Italian terrace overlooking the valley and the beautiful park with its French gardens. The whole place has a calm, elegant atmosphere that really makes it stand out.

The rooms are (of course) also beautifully styled, and the on-site restaurant is everything you’d want from a chateau stay. In terms of pricing, you can expect rates to start around €120 and climb to €520+ for the top suites, depending on the season. 

Hôtel du Château du Rivau – $$$ 

If you’ve ever dreamed of staying in a real-life fairytale castle, you need to book Hôtel du Château du Rivau. This 13th-century medieval fortress is located near Chinon and has been transformed into a storybook hotel. Each room is uniquely decorated and inspired by Renaissance or medieval figures, and as a guest, you get exclusive access to the stunning illuminated gardens after hours.

What we loved most here was the feeling of being completely transported to another world. The gardens are absolutely incredible, and the on-site restaurants are fantastic. It’s a truly unique and unforgettable experience, perfect for a romantic getaway or a special family trip. Rooms start from around €250 per night, with suites from €340.

Château de la Ronde  – $$ 

For a truly luxurious escape at an unbeatable mid-range price, the Château de la Ronde is a hidden gem worth checking out! This 17th-century chateau, located just a short drive from Saumur, has been transformed into an exclusive guesthouse with just a few incredibly spacious and beautifully designed suites. 

The best part about this property is the sense of total privacy you get when you stay here. The chateau is surrounded by woodland, with a striking round pool and a jacuzzi tucked into the grounds. It really does feel like your own secret retreat; peaceful, refined, and ideal for couples or anyone looking to really treat themselves! Rates typically start from around €325 to €465+ per night, depending on the suite.

Le Château des Forges – $

For a more affordable stay near the city of Angers, Le Château des Forges is also a fantastic find. This 19th-century chateau has a unique “chalet” style, with brick and stone architecture that feels both rustic and elegant. We were so impressed with the spacious, light-filled rooms and the beautiful views over the Mayenne River.

We also love the relaxed, welcoming atmosphere here. The hosts are incredibly friendly, and the homemade breakfast was absolutely delicious. It also has an outdoor pool, which is basically a must in the summer months. And location-wise, it’s the ideal base for exploring the western end of the Loire Valley! 

Rates typically start from around €95 to €150+ per night, which is an incredible value for this region. 

Château de Beaulieu – $ 

Another fantastic budget-friendly option near Saumur is Château de Beaulieu, a beautiful 18th-century château set in a lovely garden with its own vineyard. We absolutely adored the elegant, unique rooms, some of which have four-poster beds and timeless, antique-style furniture. The beds are also incredibly comfy, which is always appreciated, as sleep is essential for château-hopping! 

Rates for this hotel typically start from around €150 to €440+ per night, making it a great pick for those looking for something a little more elevated than an average hotel, without going full luxury.

Top Activities to do in The Loire Valley

Beyond the incredible château stays, the Loire Valley is also packed with unforgettable experiences. From exploring iconic castles to tasting world-class wines, there’s no shortage of ways to make your visit unforgettable. Here are a few of our absolute favorites that you won’t want to miss:

• Visit the most famous Loire Valley Châteaus: We booked this small-group tour to Chambord and Chenonceau, and it was such an easy way to see the highlights. With transport, a guide, and even lunch at a family château included, it made the whole day feel seamless and special!

• Ride in a hot air balloon: This hot air balloon ride was easily one of the most unforgettable experiences we had! Floating over castles, vineyards, and the countryside at sunrise or sunset gives you a completely different perspective of the region.

• Sip wine in Caves Ambacia: There’s no better way to get to know the Loire Valley than on a guided wine tasting and cellar tour. We loved learning about the traditional winemaking process, and (of course) sampling some of the region’s standout wines along the way.
