Our Top Choice

The tour we loved the most and suggest booking ASAP is this one!
Our FAVORITE thing we did in Marbella was this Andalusia jeep tour! Riding through the Sierra de las Nieves in an open-top 4×4 was such a fun change from the beach scene, and the views were unreal. We loved exploring white villages and seeing a more traditional side of southern Spain.

Things to do in Marbella
1. Go dolphin watching in Estepona Bay

Tour Details
This dolphin watching tour in Estepona Bay is such a special experience, and easily one of the most memorable things you can do while staying near Marbella! The starting point is about a 30-minute drive from Marbella, but trust us, it’s worth it to see dolphins jumping alongside your boat.
What we really like about this tour is how relaxed and intimate it feels. The sailboat only takes a small group, so you’re not crammed in with loads of people like on bigger tours. You can move around freely and either sit in the sun or find a shaded spot if you prefer. It also feels a lot more personal, which makes the whole experience even better.

The crew are another big highlight. They know exactly where to go and how to spot dolphins, which gives you a really good chance of seeing them up close. And when you do, it’s the most incredible feeling! Watching them swim alongside the boat and jump through the waves is an experience that will stick with you long after your trip.
Plus, the whole experience is very laid back. There’s time to relax and enjoy the complimentary beer or cava, and you’ll be able to jump in for a swim if the conditions are right. Overall, this is a perfect mix of adventure and relaxation, and we think it’s a must-do if you’re visiting this part of southern Spain – but don’t just take our word for it because you can read hundreds of glowing reviews here.
2. Experience Andalusia on a jeep excursion

Tour Details
This Andalusia jeep tour was hands down our favorite experience in Marbella, and we’d go as far as saying it’s a must-do while you’re here! It’s a nice change from the beaches and beach clubs, and gives you a completely different perspective on the region.
The day starts with hotel pickup, and from there you head straight into the mountains in an open-top 4×4 – and to be honest, that alone makes it feel like an adventure! Driving through the Sierra de las Nieves National Park with the wind in your hair and those views all around you is so much fun, and it feels so different from the polished coastal areas.

What really stood out to us about this tour was how much we learned along the way. The guides are incredibly knowledgeable, not just about the landscapes, but also the history, wildlife, and local culture.
The stops in the white villages were another highlight. Walking through places like Ojén and Monda gave us a glimpse into a quieter, more traditional side of southern Spain. And if you’re visiting in summer, the chance to cool off with a swim in a mountain river is a huge bonus!
As much as we love the glamorous, beachy side of Marbella, we’re also so glad that we got to explore a different side of Spain. If you like off-the-beaten-path adventures, this tour is perfect, and it was the best thing that we did in Marbella!
3. Relax at the beach and luxury beach clubs

Marbella is known for its beaches and beach clubs, so you definitely need to spend some time by the sea while you’re here. I mean, that’s kind of the whole point of coming to the Costa del Sol, right?
If you want something easy, Playa de la Fontanilla is probably the best place to start. It’s right in central Marbella, so you don’t need to make a big mission out of it, and there are plenty of places nearby for lunch or a drink. It does get busy, but that’s to be expected when a beach is this convenient!
Then there’s Playa de Puerto Banús, which has a very different feel. This is the flashier side of Marbella, with yachts, beach clubs, designer shops, and people who look like they spend a lot more on sunglasses than I do. It’s not necessarily the most relaxed beach day, but it’s definitely worth seeing.
If you want the full Marbella beach club experience, Nikki Beach is the obvious choice. It’s pricey, but it’s iconic, and if you’re going to do a beach club day here, this is the one most people have heard of!
For something quieter, I’d head to Playa de Cabopino. It’s more natural, with sand dunes and a much more chilled-out feel, so it’s a better choice for families or anyone who wants a stripped-back beach day away from the glitz and glam.
4. Taste Marbella’s best tapas

Tour Details
We think this tapas tour is the perfect way to experience Marbella Old Town properly! We always say that there’s no better way to get to know a new place than through its food. And to be honest, we always think food tours are best done early in a trip, because you come away knowing exactly what to order for the rest of your stay!
The tour starts near the Dalà sculptures, which is already a fun little cultural bonus, before heading into Marbella’s historic center. From there, you’ll wander through the pretty whitewashed streets, past the old city walls, Plaza de los Naranjos, and the Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Encarnación.

But of course, the tapas are still the main event! You’ll stop at a few different local spots and try 8+ different tapas, paired with wine or another drink of your choice. It amounts to a full meal, so definitely arrive hungry.
This tour definitely gives you a more local feel for Marbella. It’s easy to get caught up in the beach clubs and flashy side of town, but Old Town has so much charm, and exploring it with a guide makes a big difference. Plus, a food tour helps you avoid the tourist traps and chow down on the best local food! The small-group setup is great too, because you can ask questions and get proper recommendations, and you even get a PDF of extra restaurant tips, which is always a win!
5. Go parasailing

Tour Details
Parasailing just feels made for Marbella! You’ve got the sunshine, the Mediterranean, the Costa del Sol coastline, and that whole holiday feeling, so why not get up in the air and see it all from above?
This parasailing flight might sound a bit scary, but it’s actually very smooth! The crew gets you set up with a harness and life jacket and talks you through everything before you take off directly from the boat. There’s no dramatic jumping or anything like that, you just lift gently into the air, and suddenly you’re floating above the sea!
And trust me, that’s the best part. It’s exciting, of course, but it’s also quite peaceful at the same time. You’re up there with the breeze on your face and the coastline stretching out below you, so it feels very serene, and slightly surreal.
The flight lasts around 10 to 12 minutes, and before and after your turn, you get to enjoy the boat ride too. You might even spot some dolphins if you’re lucky!
Parasailing is a classic Costa del Sol activity, and it’s perfect if you want something fun but not too intense. It’s easy to fit into your day, feels like a proper holiday experience, and gives you a totally different view of the coast. Definitely one to add to your Marbella list!
6. Experience Puerto Banús

Puerto Banús is the flashiest part of Marbella, and it’s definitely worth seeing, even if it’s not usually your kind of thing. This is where you’ll find the huge superyachts, designer shops, luxury cars, and beach clubs. The people here look like they’ve just stepped out of a magazine!
Now, this is not exactly the place to go if you’re looking for quiet Spanish charm, but that’s kind of the point. Puerto Banús is all about the glitz, and it doesn’t try to hide it. We think it’s fun to come here for a wander and enjoy the luxury vibes. It’s fun to walk along the marina and admire the yachts and browse the designer storefronts – it’s a glimpse into how the other half live, that’s for sure.
The nightlife here is also a big part of the appeal. If you want a more glamorous night out in Marbella, this is where you’ll find the beach clubs and cocktail bars. Astral Cocktail Bar is one of the most famous, and its fresh fruit cocktails really are works of art!
Even if you only spend an hour or two here, Puerto Banús is worth checking out. It shows you a totally different side of Marbella, and the people-watching alone is very entertaining.
7. Visit Ronda for sightseeing and wine tasting

Tour Details
Marbella is gorgeous, but there’s so much more to the region than the coast, and Ronda is definitely one of the best places to experience that. This Ronda wine tour is the perfect way to see more of Andalusia without having to plan a big day trip yourself – or having to drive and miss out on the wine!
The drive itself is part of the fun, as you head inland through the Sierra de las Nieves National Park towards Ronda. Once you arrive, you’ll have free time to explore the town, which is stunning. Ronda is famous for its dramatic gorge and the Puente Nuevo bridge, and it looks every bit as impressive in real life as it does in photos.

The wine side of the tour is what makes it extra special, though. You’ll visit two local wineries, learn about how wine is made in this part of Andalusia, and enjoy guided tastings along the way. We always love winery tours where you get a bit of behind-the-scenes context, because it makes the tasting so much more interesting.
There’s also a tapas-style lunch included, which is exactly what you want in between wine tastings! The whole day feels relaxed but still really well organized, and having a knowledgeable guide makes a big difference. If you like wine, beautiful scenery, and exploring beyond the obvious tourist spots, this is the ideal day out from Marbella – cheers!

8. Experience BenahavÃs River Walk on a canyoning adventure

Tour Details
This canyoning adventure is such a fun way to experience the wilder side of Marbella! It’s easy to think of Marbella as all beach clubs and fancy dinners, but this tour shows you a completely different side of the area.
The BenahavÃs River Walk is basically a natural playground, with clear water and high canyon walls – it’s really beautiful! Over the course of around 3 hours, you’ll walk, swim, scramble over rocks, jump into natural pools, and even rappel if you’re up for it. And don’t worry, the jumps and rappels are optional, so you can make it as adventurous as you want, which we really like.
This is also a great choice for families or groups with mixed confidence levels. You do need to be able to swim and have a reasonable level of fitness, but you don’t need any canyoning experience. The guides handle the route, safety, and gear, so you can just focus on enjoying it.
Another big bonus is that everything is included, from wetsuits and helmets to canyoning shoes, which makes the whole thing super easy. The guides also take photos and videos, so you don’t have to worry about bringing your phone into the water, and you’ll still get that all-important footage!
If you want something active and totally different from a normal sightseeing tour, this is a great pick. It’s adventurous without being too extreme, and it’s an awesome way to break up all the beach time in Marbella.
9. Explore Marbella Old Town

Marbella Old Town is basically the opposite of Puerto Banús, and that’s exactly why we like it! Instead of superyachts and designer shops, you’ve got cobbled streets lined with whitewashed buildings and pops of color from the flower-filled balconies overhead. It’s the epitome of Andalusian charm, so we loved coming here to wander around and get a little bit lost for a while.
The beauty of the Old Town is that you really don’t need a plan to explore. You can just head in and see what you stumble across. The postcard-worthy streets are full of boutique shops and tapas bars, so you’re bound to find something good!
The main spot to check out is Plaza de los Naranjos, or Orange Square, which is the heart of the Old Town. It’s lined with restaurants and historic buildings, and it’s a nice place to stop for a drink and do a bit of people-watching.
We also think this is one of the best parts of Marbella for getting a more local feel. It’s still popular with visitors, of course, but it has so much more character than the flashier parts of town. It’s easy to spend a few hours here shopping and stopping for tapas. Then, when you’re ready, you can make your way down to the beachfront promenade, which is a lovely way to end your visit.

10. Relax on a sunset sail

Tour Details
This sunset sailing tour is such a lovely way to end a day in Marbella. After a busy day of beaches and sightseeing, there’s something very appealing about getting out on the water with a drink in hand and doing absolutely nothing for a couple of hours.
The tour leaves from Estepona, which is a short drive from Marbella, and takes place on a small sailboat with a relaxed, intimate feel. It’s not a big party boat, and that’s exactly what we like about it! You can just sit back with a glass of cava or sangria in hand – your choice! – and enjoy the views as the sun starts to go down.
We also love that there’s a chance to see dolphins. Of course, sightings can never be guaranteed, but lots of people do spot them on this tour, and seeing dolphins at sunset does sound pretty magical if you ask me!
That said, even without dolphins, this still sounds like a really worthwhile experience. The views from the water are beautiful, and the atmosphere is calm, so it’s a nice change from the busier beach clubs and nightlife scene.
We think this is an especially good choice for couples, but it would also work well for friends or families who want something more chilled out. If you’re looking for a peaceful, scenic evening near Marbella, this sunset sail is a great pick.
11. See Tangier on a luxury full-day trip

Tour Details
This private Tangier day trip is such a cool option if you want to experience a totally different culture without adding another overnight stop to your itinerary. Morocco is so close to southern Spain, and this tour makes it so easy to visit – you’d be surprised!
What really makes this one stand out is the private aspect. You’re not being herded around in a big group, and that makes a huge difference on a busy, full-day trip like this. Your guide can tailor the pace, answer all of your questions, and help you navigate the medina and markets without feeling overwhelmed. It feels much more personal, and Tangier is definitely the kind of place where having a local guide is a huge help.

The itinerary packs in a lot, too. You’ll cross by ferry from Tarifa, then explore Tangier’s medina, the Kasbah, Cap Spartel, the Caves of Hercules, and even enjoy a camel ride on the beach. Breakfast and lunch are included as well, so you get to try proper Moroccan food without having to figure out where to go.
We think this is a great choice if you’re short on time but still want a little taste of Morocco. It’s a long day, but because transport, ferry tickets, food, and guiding are all handled for you, it feels much less stressful than trying to do it independently. If you want a unique day trip from Marbella that feels like a real adventure, this is a fantastic pick!
12. Bicycle along the Golden Mile

The Golden Mile is the stretch between Marbella Old Town and Puerto Banús, and it’s one of the most famous parts of the coastline. It’s only around 4-5 km long, but it’s lined with luxury hotels, beachfront restaurants, palm trees, and some very expensive-looking houses! We especially loved the views from “Embarcadero”, the redwood bridge.
You can walk it if you want, but we think renting a bicycle is way more fun. The route is flat and easy, and it only takes around 30 minutes if you cycle straight through. But don’t rush it! There are plenty of places along the route where you can stop for a drink and have a nosey at all of the fancy hotels and beach clubs along the way.
The path is a mix of bike lanes and seaside promenade, so it’s pretty relaxed and easy to follow. You’ll get sea views for a lot of the ride, and it’s a nice way to connect the more traditional side of Marbella with the glitzier Puerto Banús area.
There are plenty of bike rental places in both Marbella and Puerto Banús, so it’s easy to organize. We’d just try to go earlier in the morning or later in the afternoon if you’re visiting in summer, because cycling in the midday heat is not the one!

Where to Stay in Marbella

Marbella has no shortage of great places to stay, but we think the Old Town and beachfront areas are the best bases for most visitors. You’ll be within walking distance of beaches, tapas bars, and Marbella’s lively atmosphere. Since this is one of the Costa del Sol’s most popular destinations, we’d recommend booking early, especially during summer and holiday weekends.
Here are three great hotels in Marbella for every budget!
La Fonda Heritage Hotel Luxury – $$$
La Fonda Heritage Hotel Luxury is a pretty rare find because (and this is still a bit unbelievable), while it was being renovated, they discovered the nave of the 16th-century Hermitage of San Sebastián, with the altar and frescoes still intact, which are now part of the hotel’s design. I mean, how often can you say that about a place you stayed in Spain?
But apart from that, the hotel really does feel luxurious, no matter where you turn, with a restaurant that was the first to receive a Michelin star in Marbella, and now a Michelin Key too, which feels pretty well deserved once you’ve seen it all. And since there are only 20 rooms (all beautifully done with bespoke furniture), it feels more personal than a busy resort stay, which is kind of our thing.
Rooms start around €400 per night, depending on the season and availability. For a mix of history and stylish comfort, book your luxury stay here!
Óbal Hotel Marbella – $$
Óbal Hotel Marbella ended up being one of our favorite stays in Spain, mainly for how easy it felt to settle in, with a rooftop pool (we dropped our bags and headed straight up) and a bar where you might randomly catch live music, which is exactly our kind of evening. It helps that it’s just steps from Marbella’s main square, so you’re right in the middle of things but still have a calm place to come back to and reset.
Rooms have been recently renovated and still feel fresh, with a modern, minimalist design that works for us, whether you go for a compact single or something larger (go for the suite if you want more space). There’s also an in-house restaurant serving Mediterranean food throughout the day, which is really handy when you don’t feel like searching for somewhere to eat.
Prices here usually range from €115 to €300+ per night. Check current room rates and book your stay at Obal Hotel Marbella here!
Hostal El Gallo – $
If you’re not sold on luxury amenities and prefer something more real and social, Hostal El Gallo is your kind of place. This family-run guesthouse is best known for its restaurant, where locals and tourists end up sharing tables over fresh fish and paella.
We especially love the location, on a quiet, narrow street with flowers and little balconies. It’s central but still peaceful, which you’ll appreciate when you’re trying to fall asleep at night. Rooms are simple but functional, so you won’t feel like you’re missing anything. Some come with a small balcony or patio, and there’s also a shared terrace if you want a bit of outdoor space.
With prices starting around €80 per night, it’s one of the better-value stays in central Marbella, and a great pick for budget travelers or solo explorers. Check availability and book this budget-friendly stay in Marbella here!

Renting a Car in Europe

Exploring Europe by car is a fantastic way to uncover hidden gems—think charming villages, scenic countryside, and off-the-beaten-path spots that trains and buses might miss. Driving here is generally straightforward, but it’s good to be prepared for some regional quirks.
We always use Discover Cars to book our rentals and can’t recommend them enough. It’s super easy to compare prices, check company ratings, find automatic cars (which can be tricky in Europe!), and add affordable full coverage insurance.Â

What’s an eSIM?
An eSIM is a digital version of a SIM card. Instead of buying a little plastic chip and swapping it into your phone, you just download it. It connects your phone to a local network in whatever country you’re visiting — no stores, no waiting, and no fiddling with tiny cards.
In simple terms, it’s the easiest way to get data and stay connected while traveling.
We’ve tested a bunch of eSIMs in North America, and after a few frustrating experiences, we’ve found our favorite — Airalo. It’s fast, reliable, and incredibly easy to use. You can set it up in minutes (even my mom managed it solo on her first try!), and the prices are some of the best out there.
🔥 Hot Tip: Choose the Europe-wide eSIM! It works across multiple countries, so you can hop from France to Italy to Spain without ever losing connection. One download, endless adventures.
