We also loved that it never felt rushed. There was enough time at both stops to explore, take photos, and actually enjoy the experience.

At least a month in advance! Barcelona is busy year-round, and the Sagrada Familia is super popular, so you want to secure your spot well in advance. Two months ahead is actually a safer time frame, especially during the summer! All of the tours we’ve mentioned in this blog offer free cancellation, so you have nothing to lose by grabbing your spot early.

Is booking a tour with skip-the-line entry or tower access necessary? 

To be honest, we think skip-the-line entry is a necessity. The Sagrada Familia is the most famous sight in Barcelona (and maybe even all of Spain), so the queues can get super long. We didn’t want to spend 3-4 hours waiting to get in, so skip-the-line entry truly was a must for us.

Now, tower access isn’t necessary, but it’s a big perk! If you’re really into history and architecture, we’d recommend visiting the Nativity Tower, as most of it was completed during Gaudí’s lifetime, and so it’s closer to his original vision. However, the Passion Tower offers better city views! 

Bear in mind that while the towers have an elevator up, you can’t take it back down again. You’ll have to walk down nearly 400 stairs! The staircases are narrow and spiraling, so I must say I was glad when I got down to the bottom again. It’s probably not the best idea to take this on if you have mobility issues or aren’t confident with heights.

Is visiting Sagrada Familia worth it?

Absolutely! It really took our breath away. The exterior is incredible, but the lighting effects and intricate details on the inside are what really make it special. It’s definitely worth going with a guide as it just enriches the visit so much, and helps to convey what an architectural triumph this building really is.

While there are many excellent neighborhoods to stay in Barcelona, we loved staying in Eixample. It’s close to the top city sights, super walkable, charming, and full of character. Restaurants and cafes are a short walk away, and you’ll find plenty of hotel options too! It has all you could ask for!
