Because of this, you won’t need a rental car during your stay. Walking is usually the best way to get around, and you can reach most landmarks within just a few minutes. Then, public transportation can easily connect you to the train station or nearby towns if you’re planning on taking some day trips. 

The Historic Center around Market Square and Burg is the best choice for first-time visitors who want to stay right in the middle of the action. Nearby quarters like Sint-Anna and Sint-Gillis offer a quieter atmosphere while still being within walking distance of the main sights. And finally, the Magdalena Quarter sits slightly south of the center and is perfect if you want easy access to Bruges’ most scenic parks and canals.

This area is filled with medieval buildings, winding canals, and cobblestone streets that look like they’ve barely changed in centuries. And if it’s your first time visiting Bruges, staying here is also super convenient because most of the city’s biggest landmarks are within just a few minutes’ walk.

Market Square (Markt) is the lively heart of the neighborhood and one of the most famous squares in Belgium. It’s surrounded by colorful historic buildings and is home to the towering Belfry of Bruges, which visitors can climb for panoramic views over the city’s rooftops. Just around the corner is Burg Square, another beautiful historic plaza where you’ll find the Basilica of the Holy Blood and the ornate Bruges City Hall.

The canals that run through this part of the city add even more charm, with small bridges and waterfront buildings that make every corner feel picturesque. Sint-Anna is one of the most charming neighborhoods in Bruges and we like it because it offers a more local feel compared to the busy streets around Market Square. The area sits just east of the main tourist center, but it still falls within the greater historic district, so you’ll find the same cobblestone lanes, canals, and traditional Flemish architecture that make Bruges so beautiful. There are just fewer crowds to contend with! 

This neighborhood is more residential, and it’s a lovely place to wander in the morning when locals are walking to bakeries or cycling through the narrow streets. You’ll also come across several historic windmills along the nearby Kruisvest canal, which are some of the most picturesque sights in Bruges.

Despite its quieter setting, Sint-Anna is still very close to the city’s top landmarks. Market Square and Burg Square are only about a 10-minute walk away, so it’s easy to explore the main sights and then return to a more peaceful part of town when you need some downtime. All in all, we think this neighborhood is a great choice if you’re looking to experience Bruges beyond the busiest tourist streets, but still want to be within walking distance of the historic center.

The neighborhood feels more residential, with calm streets and picturesque canals that wind through the area. It has the same beautiful medieval architecture as the rest of Bruges, but without the constant crowds you’ll find closer to Market Square.

One of the nicest things about staying here is how peaceful it feels in the evenings. After a day of sightseeing in the busy historic center, it’s lovely to return to a quieter neighborhood where the canals are calm, and the streets are less hectic.

Despite its relaxed atmosphere, Sint-Gillis is still very convenient for exploring the city. Market Square and the Belfry Tower are only about a 10-minute walk away, and you’ll cross several scenic canals along the way. The area is also close to Jan Van Eyck Square and the canal routes used for Bruges’ famous boat tours. If you want a calm base with easy access to Bruges’ top landmarks, we think that Sint-Gillis is a fantastic option!

Canal View Hotel Ter Brughe – $$$

The Magdalena Quarter sits just south of Bruges’ Historic Center and is one of the most scenic parts of the city! This area is known for its green spaces and quiet canals, but there are also several historic landmarks around, like Vismarket (the fish market), St. Magdalene’s Church, and the charming Huidenvettersplein square. We think it’s a lovely choice if you want easy access to Bruges’ main sights while still enjoying a slightly calmer atmosphere, and a great pick if you’ve visited the city before.

One of the biggest highlights here is Minnewater Park, often called the “Lake of Love.” The park is filled with tree-lined paths, bridges, and swans gliding across the water, making it one of the most picturesque spots in Bruges. We fell in love with it instantly! Nearby, you’ll also find the Begijnhof, a peaceful historic courtyard founded in the 13th century, where religious women once lived in a quiet community.

The canals running through this part of the city add even more charm, and we find walking along them to be one of the nicest ways to explore Bruges. Despite its tranquil setting, the Historic Center is still only about a 10-15 minute walk away. For travelers who want a mix of nature, history, and easy access to the city’s top landmarks, the Magdalena Quarter is a fantastic place to stay.

Boutique Hotel Die Swaene – $$$ 

Boutique Hotel Die Swaene is one of the most charming luxury stays in Bruges and sits right along a beautiful canal near the southern edge of the Historic Center. The hotel occupies a historic mansion with lots of classic Flemish character.

The rooms are elegant and spacious, offering lovely views of either the canals or the city. We like how they’re decorated with antique furniture, with lots of red velvet and golden tones everywhere. Top Activities to do in Bruges

• Take a walking and boat tour of the city – Want to learn more about Bruges? This city tour is the best way to do so! Not only will you explore its historic streets with a local guide, but you will also enjoy a canal cruise to see the city from a different point of view.

• Go on a food tour – I didn’t realize just how many amazing foods came from Belgium until we did this food tour in Bruges. We tried 10 different items, including Belgian fries, waffles, cheeses, and lots of beer to go with it all!

• Take a chocolate-making workshop – If you have a sweet tooth like I do, you can’t miss this chocolate-making workshop! Discover the art of Belgian chocolate, which is definitely harder than it looks, but just as tasty as it sounds.

• Explore Bruges on a vintage bike – We loved this bicycle tour because it lets us see more of the city in just a few hours! Paired with an informative guide and a retro bicycle, this experience was even more memorable.

• Enjoy waffles and beer – This waffles and beer tour was totally unique, and totally worth it! It was a quick addition to our itinerary, but memorable as we learned how to perfectly make a Belgian waffle and how beer complements this fluffy treat.
