1. Discover Azorean food and culture

One of our favorite ways to get to know a new place is through its food, and São Miguel is no exception. We booked this small-group food tour in Ponta Delgada, and it ended up being the perfect introduction to Azorean cuisine.
Over the course of three and a half hours, our guide walked us through the city’s historic streets, stopping at local markets and traditional eateries. We tried everything (and I mean, everything), including fresh local cheeses and jams, traditional meats, and plenty of seafood. One of the highlights was the São Jorge cheese—sharp, slightly spicy, and unlike anything we’ve had before. The portions were generous, so we definitely recommend showing up hungry!
What we loved most was the context our guide provided. We not only ate a ton of delicious food, but we also learned about the history behind the dishes and how the island’s unique geography shapes its agriculture. It honestly felt like walking around with a friend who knew all the best spots in town!
If you love learning about local cultures and eating seriously good food, this tour is a must. We’d especially recommend doing it early in your trip to help you discover what to order for the rest of your stay!
2. Experience Furnas’ geothermal activity, waterfalls, and viewpoints

Furnas is one of the most fascinating areas on the island, and this full-day van tour is the easiest way to see it all. We loved not having to worry about driving or navigating the winding mountain roads. Even better, the tour is run in a small 9-seater van, which makes the whole experience feel much more personal and relaxed.
The day kicks off at Nossa Senhora da Paz, which is a beautiful chapel at the top of a hill overlooking Vila Franca do Campo and the Atlantic Ocean. From there, you head into the heart of Furnas, one of the island’s most geologically active areas. You’ll explore steaming fumaroles, bubbling mud pools, and natural hot springs, with the chance to taste the naturally carbonated mineral water straight from the source.
The highlight of the afternoon, though, was definitely the lunch. We got to eat “cozido,” a traditional Portuguese stew that is literally slow-cooked underground using the natural volcanic heat. It’s a totally unique experience, and the stew itself was absolutely incredible. After lunch, you’ll explore the stunning Ribeira dos Caldeirões waterfall before stopping off at several viewpoints of the coastline, so make sure your camera is ready!

3. Visit Gorreana Tea Plantation
Did you know that São Miguel is home to Europe’s oldest and only tea plantation? We were surprised to learn this, and visiting the Gorreana Tea Plantation quickly became one of our favorite stops on the whole island.
The plantation has been operating since 1883, and you can wander right through the beautiful, terraced fields of tea plants. The contrast of the bright green rows against the blue ocean in the background is stunning. We spent a good hour just walking the rows and taking a few pictures.
The best part is that it’s completely free to enter, and you can take a self-guided tour of the factory to see the vintage machinery in action. Afterward, they offer complimentary tea tastings, which are a lovely way to sample the different varieties. There’s also a great little hiking trail that loops through the estate, which takes about an hour and offers some fantastic photo opportunities.
Top tip: pick up a few boxes of tea before you leave, it makes for a perfect, lightweight souvenir!
4. Go canyoning at Ribeira Grande

If you’re an adrenaline junkie, you have to try this canyoning experience at Ribeira Grande. The adventure takes place in the Ribeira dos Caldeirões Natural Park, which is incredibly lush and beautiful.
After getting suited up in your wetsuits and harnesses (which are conveniently included in your tour fee), you’ll hike into the canyon and spend the next couple of hours rappelling down waterfalls, sliding over wet rocks, and, if you’re feeling brave, jumping into the crystal-clear pools.
The guides on this tour are known for being upbeat, encouraging, and highly safety-conscious. Even if you’ve never tried canyoning before, you’ll feel comfortable and well taken care of. They do a great job of building your confidence as you go, so you can push yourself as much, or as little, as you like.
To make things easy, hotel pick-up is available from most spots around Ponta Delgada, so you don’t have to worry about getting to the starting point yourself! If you’re not staying in Ponta Delgada, you can sometimes arrange pick-up for a small fee; just ask when you go to make your booking.

5. Ride a quad bike around the Sete Cidades Volcano
Tour Details
Exploring the Sete Cidades area is an absolute must on your visit to São Miguel, and doing it on this half-day quad bike tour is by far the most fun way to do it.
Instead of just driving to the main viewpoints in a car, you get to take these powerful ATVs off-road, climbing up dirt trails to the highest peaks surrounding the volcano caldera. The views of the twin lakes (one blue, one green) from some of the spots are spectacular, and you’ll be able to access areas that regular vehicles simply cannot reach.
Your guide will lead the way throughout the entire trip, starting in the coastal parish of Fenais da Luz before heading along scenic seafront roads and into the more rugged interior. Along the way, you’ll pass historic sites like the Muro das Nove Janelas aqueduct and climb up to Pico da Cruz, one of the highest points in the area.
You’ll also stop at Miradouro das Cumeeiras for breathtaking views over the Sete Cidades crater and coastline, and ride along dirt paths around the lakes near Cerrado das Freiras. On the way back, you’ll pass through small villages like São Vicente Ferreira before looping back to where you started.
Just a heads up: it can get chilly and muddy up in the mountains, so dress warmly and wear clothes you don’t mind getting a little dirty!
6. Go hiking
São Miguel has a thriving hiking scene, and hitting the trails is one of the best ways to appreciate the island’s dramatic scenery. There are dozens of well-maintained routes, but here are a few of our absolute favorites that you should definitely check out during your trip:
- Salto do Prego – This is a moderate hike that takes you through a dense, jungle-like forest and ends at a beautiful waterfall where you can take a cold, refreshing dip.
- Vista do Rei to Sete Cidades – This is an easy, mostly downhill trail that offers stunning views of the Blue Lake and the Green Lake as you make your way down into the village of Sete Cidades.
- Rota da Água – Janela do Inferno – A moderate 7.5-kilometer (4.6-mile) loop with minimal elevation gain. The trail takes you through a few tunnels, a cave, and a waterfall at the midway point.
- Lagoa do Fogo – If you’re up for a challenge, this 10.6-kilometer (6.5-mile) trail loops around the stunning Crater Lake of Fire. It’s pretty steep, but the views are definitely worth it!
We highly recommend downloading an offline map before you head out, as cell service can be spotty in the mountains. Also, the weather changes quickly, so always pack a light rain jacket just in case!
7. Go whale watching

The Azores are known as one of the best places in the world for whale watching, so we knew we had to book this half-day wildlife tour from Ponta Delgada.
The experience starts at the marina (no hotel pick-up for this tour), where you’ll get a short but really informative briefing led by marine biologists on what to expect and what you might see.
You’ll then board your boat and head out into the Atlantic in search of whales and dolphins. You can choose between a larger catamaran or a smaller inflatable speedboat. We went with the speedboat, and it was such a thrill! Being closer to the water makes the experience feel more immersive, especially when wildlife appears nearby.
Sightings vary depending on the day, but you might see dolphins, sperm whales, and possibly baleen whales passing through the area. We were lucky enough to spot a huge pod of dolphins in the wake of the boat, which was so cool!
After your time on the water, you’ll head back to the marina, where the guides are happy to answer any questions and chat more about what you saw.
One thing we really appreciated is that if you don’t spot any whales or dolphins, you’ll get a full refund, so there’s very little risk in giving it a try!
8. See São Miguel’s highlights on a full island tour

If you want to get off the beaten path and see parts of the island that most people miss, this full-day hidden gems tour is exactly what you’re looking for.
Instead of the usual tourist stops, you’ll explore some of São Miguel’s less crowded viewpoints and waterfalls over the course of a full day, with some of the main highlights including the Fenais da Ajuda, the 40-meter (about 130-foot) Salto da Farinha, and the tucked-away Cascata do Risco.
The pace of this tour is super relaxed, with no strenuous hiking required, making it a great option if you want a more laid-back day of sightseeing. The guides are also very knowledgeable about the area and will be able to answer just about any question you might have about the island’s history and culture!
A traditional Azorean buffet lunch is also included, so you won’t have to worry about bringing anything with you aside from maybe a few snacks and a water bottle.

9. Check out Mosteiros Beach
If you’re looking for a unique coastal spot, Mosteiros Beach is a must-visit. It’s located in the north of São Miguel (about a 45-minute drive from Ponta Delgada), and it’s famous for its striking black volcanic sand and the massive sea stacks that rise out of the water just offshore.
On our trip to São Miguel, we spent a quiet afternoon here, walking along the dark sand and watching the waves crash against the rocks. It really is such a fantastic place to relax, and the contrast of the black sand against the blue ocean makes for some incredible photos.
Mosteiros is also known as one of the best spots on the island to watch the sunset. So if you’re there in the late afternoon or early evening, make sure to grab a spot on the beach or head to one of the nearby cafes and savor every moment!
10. Enjoy a relaxing evening of hot springs and dinner in Furnas
Tour Details
If you’re looking for an activity to fill up an evening slot in your itinerary, this nighttime thermal baths tour is definitely worth booking!
The tour begins with hotel pick-up in Ponta Delgada around 6 pm before heading to the geothermal region of Furnas. As evening sets in, you’ll arrive at Poça da Dona Beija, one of the island’s most popular thermal bath spots. Here, you’ll soak in warm, mineral-rich waters under the stars, surrounded by gorgeous greenery and softly lit pools that create such a magical atmosphere.
After your soak, the tour wraps up with a full dinner featuring the famous Cozido das Furnas (the traditional Azores stew that’s slow-cooked underground). This really is (in our opinion) one of São Miguel’s most unique dishes and a must-try while staying on the island. You’ll also be treated to a dessert and tea or coffee, which is such a lovely way to round off the evening!

11. Swim with dolphins

Swimming with wild dolphins has always been a top bucket-list item for me, and this small-group dolphin tour made it happen in the most beautiful way possible!
The tour departs from Ponta Delgada and takes you out along the island’s stunning coastline, which is just as impressive from the water. You’ll have the chance to spot dolphins in their natural habitat, all while learning more about them from the expert guides and marine biologists onboard.
Once a pod is located, you’ll slip into the water with the snorkeling gear (included in your fee) for a chance to observe the dolphins up close. Honestly, hearing their clicks and whistles underwater and watching them glide effortlessly past you is pure magic!
The tour is limited to just eight people, which we really appreciated since it keeps the experience more intimate and less disruptive for the dolphins.
Although there’s no hotel pick-up or drop-off included for this tour, the meeting point is conveniently located in Ponta Delgada, making it easy to get to on your own if you’re staying nearby.

12. Visit one of the stunning botanical gardens
São Miguel’s volcanic soil and mild climate make it incredibly lush and green, and the island is home to some truly spectacular botanical gardens. Even if you’re not a huge plant enthusiast, these gardens are well worth a visit just for their sheer beauty and the chance to slow down for a bit!
One garden we recommend is Parque Terra Nostra. Another garden worth visiting is José do Canto. This is a peaceful oasis right in the middle of Ponta Delgada, and it features a huge variety of exotic plants and trees from all over the world. It also has a 19th-century chapel and a small waterfall, and both are absolutely stunning!

13. Explore Vila Franca do Campo Islet on a glass-bottom boat and snorkeling trip

The islet of Vila Franca do Campo is a perfectly round volcanic crater sitting just off the coast, and this glass-bottom boat tour offers a fantastic way to explore it!
Your experience begins at the marina in Vila Franca do Campo, where you’ll meet your tour guide and get a quick briefing on what to expect. From there, you’ll head out along the coastline toward the islet, taking in views of the cliffs and volcanic landscape from the water.

Here are a few of our absolute favorites:
- Miradouro da Boca do Inferno – This viewpoint is located about a 30-minute drive from Ponta Delgada, and it’s arguably the most famous viewpoint on the island. Once you arrive, you’ll find a short dirt path that leads you to a stunning overlook where you can see several crater lakes and the ocean all at once.
- Miradouro do Pico do Carvão – Located just a 20-minute drive from Ponta Delgada, this viewpoint offers a massive panoramic view of the island’s rolling hills with the sea in the distance. Just make sure to go on a clear day for the best visibility!
- Miradouro da Vista do Rei – Also about 30 minutes from Ponta Delgada, this is the classic, postcard-perfect view of the Sete Cidades twin lakes.
If you can, try to visit these spots at sunset for the best lighting. That said, clear mornings can be just as beautiful, and since the weather changes quickly on the island, it’s worth going whenever the skies open up.

Where to Stay in São Miguel
If it’s your first time visiting São Miguel, basing yourself in Ponta Delgada is usually the easiest and most convenient option. It’s right in the middle of the island, so getting out on day trips is super easy! Ponta Delgada also has the best selection of restaurants, cafes, and bars, which is especially nice after a full day of exploring when you just want somewhere easy to grab dinner.

Octant Ponta Delgada – $$$
If you really want to treat yourself, Octant Ponta Delgada is a fabulous option. This sleek, modern hotel sits right on the waterfront, so you can expect incredible ocean views from most of the rooms. There’s also a gorgeous rooftop pool and bar, as well as a spa and wellness center, so there are plenty of spaces to enjoy some downtime.
Location-wise, it’s hard to beat. You’re within a 15-minute walk of key landmarks like São Brás Fort and São Sebastião Mother Church, and it’s an easy drive to some of the island’s top spots, including Sete Cidades. Plus, Ponta Delgada Airport is just 10 minutes away, which makes arrival and departure super convenient.

Hotel Do Colegio – $$
Hotel Do Colegio is a fantastic mid-range option located right in the historic center of Ponta Delgada.
It’s housed in a beautifully restored 19th-century building, and the rooms are comfortable and spacious. Guests love the quiet courtyard, the outdoor pool, and the excellent breakfast buffet. And best of all, it’s just a short walk to the harbor and all the main city sights, so everything you need will be right on your doorstep.
In terms of pricing, you can expect rooms to fall between €110 and €165 per night, which is incredible value for such a central location! Secure this gorgeous mid-range stay before it fills up here!
Hotel Alcides – $
If you’re traveling on a budget but still want a comfortable and central place to stay, Hotel Alcides is a great pick. While it doesn’t have all the bells and whistles of the higher-end options, it more than makes up for it with its unbeatable location in the heart of Ponta Delgada.
You’ll be within walking distance of shops, restaurants, and the waterfront, making it super easy to explore the city without needing a car. Another big plus here is the on-site restaurant, which is well-known for its traditional Portuguese dishes, perfect for those evenings when you don’t feel like venturing too far for dinner.
