How to Spend THREE to FIVE DAYS in Sao Miguel, Portugal: The Best 3 to 5-Day Itinerary
Planning a trip to São Miguel? You’re in for a treat!
São Miguel is the largest island in the Azores, and it’s home to some seriously stunning coastal views and jaw-dropping volcanic craters. However, what a lot of people don’t realize is that the island itself is quite big, and all the must-see spots are pretty spread out. Without a plan, it’s easy to spend more time driving than actually enjoying your time there.
That’s exactly why we’ve put together this itinerary. We’ve carefully organized each day by location to minimize travel time, while thoughtfully blending iconic sights with authentic local experiences and, of course, lots of delicious local food. Ready to make the most of every single day in São Miguel? Let’s go!
Don’t miss out!
Our Top Choice
The tour we loved the most and suggest booking ASAP is this one!
Our FAVORITE thing we did in São Miguel was this full-day Furnas tour. Not having to deal with the island’s winding roads was a win on its own, but the real fun was hopping between viewpoints and these wild, steaming geothermal spots. And that cozido cooked in the ground was one of our favorite meals of the trip!

Itinerary Overview

São Miguel is often called the “Green Island,” and you’ll quickly understand why once you start exploring its vibrant, lush landscapes over the course of three to five days.
To make the most of this itinerary, you’ll definitely want to book a rental car. While there are some public buses, having your own set of wheels gives you the freedom to explore the island at your own pace and reach the more remote viewpoints and trailheads. The island has good, well-maintained roads, and you’ll find that most of the major sights are only a 20 to 30-minute drive away from each other.
To make logistics as easy as possible, we recommend basing yourself in or near Ponta Delgada, which is the island’s main city. It’s incredibly convenient for dining and evening strolls, and it serves as the perfect central hub for exploring the different corners of the island each day. And best of all, you won’t have to worry about booking multiple hotels for one trip to the island.
This itinerary is designed for up to 5 days, but if you’re short on time, you can easily follow just the first 3 days and still see many of São Miguel’s highlights. Before we get to the specifics of each day, here’s a quick overview of what to expect:
Day 1: Experience Furnas’ geothermal activity, waterfalls, and viewpoints on the East Coast on this full-day tour.
Day 2: Discover Azorean food and culture in Ponta Delgada on this food tour, then relax at Mosteiros Beach.
Day 3: Ride a quad bike or take a jeep around the volcanic craters of Sete Cidades, then visit Europe’s oldest tea plantation.
Day 4: Explore the best of the South Coast, including a pineapple plantation and Caloura, followed by this boat tour to Vila Franca do Campo Islet.
Day 5: Head inland to discover the island’s hidden gems, viewpoints, and waterfalls with a local guide on this full-day tour.
Day 1
Full day – Experience Furnas’ geothermal activity, waterfalls, and viewpoints

We’re kicking off Day 1 with some of São Miguel’s most iconic East Coast sights, and this full-day Furnas tour made it so easy to dive right in. With a 9 am hotel pickup and a return around 5 pm, we loved not having to think about driving those winding roads or planning a route—it’s all taken care of. Even better, the small 9-seater van keeps things feeling relaxed and not overly “touristy.”
The first stop is Nossa Senhora da Paz, a hilltop chapel with views that immediately set the tone for the day. From there, you’ll head into Furnas, which honestly feels like a completely different world. Think steaming vents, bubbling mud pools, and natural hot springs everywhere you look. You can even taste the naturally fizzy mineral water straight from the source, which is such a fun (and slightly strange) experience you won’t find just anywhere.

Lunch is where things get really interesting. You’ll try traditional cozido, a Portuguese stew that’s literally cooked underground using volcanic heat. It’s such a unique experience and one of those meals you’ll be talking about long after the trip. After that, the day continues with a stop at Ribeira dos Caldeirões waterfall and a few epic coastal viewpoints that are very camera-worthy.
It’s a packed but super easygoing day, and with guides who really know their stuff, it’s no surprise this tour has so many 5-star reviews. If you want a stress-free way to see Furnas and experience some of the island’s most unique highlights all in one go, this is easily one of the best tours to book early in your trip.
Tapas – Ta Gente

After a full day of exploring the eastern side of the island, you’ll probably want to head back to your hotel to rest and refresh before heading out for the evening. Once you’re ready, make your way to Ta Gente in Ponta Delgada (they open at 5 pm daily except on Sundays when they’re closed) for some pre-dinner drinks and snacks.
You’ve probably heard of the term “tapas” in Spain before, but in Portugal, they’re known as “petiscos”, and Ta Gente is the perfect place to acquaint yourself with this Portuguese take on small plates. You can expect a welcoming vibe and a funky, eclectic atmosphere, along with some seriously good cocktails that pair perfectly with the bold, savory flavors of the petiscos.
Dinner – A Tasca

When you’re ready for a proper meal, you won’t have to go far. Right down the road from Ta Gente is A Tasca, which is widely considered one of the best places in Ponta Delgada to enjoy typical Azorean food.
This restaurant is incredibly popular with both locals and visitors (which is always a good sign), and you’ll be treated to the freshest, local ingredients. We tried the tuna steak and the regional beef, and the quality was second to none!
Like other restaurants in the area, it’s open late, so you can head here whenever you’re ready (though bear in mind that dinner in the Azores is usually eaten between 7:30 and 9:30 pm). And because it’s such a well-loved spot, we highly recommend making a reservation ahead of time so you don’t have to wait for a table, and keep in mind they’re closed on Sundays.
Day 2
Morning – Coffee and Botanical Gardens

Start your second day nice and early with coffee and a pastry from Mãe D’Alma Cafetaria. This charming bakery opens at 7 am, making it the perfect first stop of the day. You do have a food tour coming up at 10 am, so you definitely don’t want to eat too much, but we loved grabbing a quick espresso and a light, flaky pastry here while watching the city wake up. Just note that they are closed on Sundays, so you’ll want to plan an alternative spot if your day two falls on a Sunday.
After your coffee, take a short stroll next door to the Jardim Botânico António Borges. This is one of the best botanical gardens in the area and makes for an incredibly peaceful, lovely way to start the morning. The garden opens at 9 am, so while you won’t have hours to spend here before your tour, you can easily enjoy the lush, exotic plants and winding paths for a half hour or so (and make sure to snap a few photos!).
Mid-day – Discover Azorean food and culture

After your relaxing morning in the gardens, it’s time to dive into one of the best parts of any trip—eating your way through it! This small-group food tour in Ponta Delgada runs from 10 am to 1:30 pm, and the meeting point is just a 15-minute walk from the botanical garden, making it a super easy next stop.
One of our favorite ways to get to know a new place is through its food, and this tour ended up being such a fun introduction to Azorean cuisine. Over three and a half hours, you’ll wander through the city’s historic streets with a local guide, stopping at markets and traditional eateries along the way. And yes—you’ll try a little bit of everything. From fresh local cheeses and jams to traditional meats and seafood, it’s a full-on tasting experience, so definitely come hungry!
One standout for us was the São Jorge cheese. It’s sharp, slightly spicy, and totally different from anything we’ve had before. But honestly, it wasn’t just about the food. Our guide shared so much context about the island’s history and how its landscape shapes what ends up on your plate, which made the whole experience feel way more meaningful.
It’s the kind of tour that sets you up for the rest of your trip. You’ll leave knowing exactly what to order (and where) for the next few days.
Afternoon – Mosteiros Beach

You’ll be plenty full from your food tour, so when it’s over, head back to your hotel to switch gears, grab your beach gear, and hop in your rental car. It’s time to head to the coast!
Make your way to Mosteiros Beach, which is located in the north of São Miguel, about a 45-minute drive from Ponta Delgada. This is a striking black-sand beach formed by ancient volcanic activity, and it’s definitely a must-see spot on the island!
We recommend spending the entire afternoon here, just taking in the scenery. You can swim in the natural pools, relax on the beach, or walk along the shoreline exploring the unique rock formations. It’s the perfect, low-key way to spend the afternoon after a busy morning, and to be honest, it ended up being our favorite afternoon of our whole trip!
Evening – Enjoy the sunset

There’s no shortage of amazing sunset spots in São Miguel, and after your afternoon at Mosteiros Beach, you are perfectly positioned to take advantage of some of the best ones on the entire island.
Since Mosteiros Beach is right on the western coast, it actually makes for a fabulous sunset spot all on its own. We loved watching the sun dip below the horizon here, especially with the sheer cliffs and dark volcanic sand providing such a dramatic contrast. If you want to move around a bit, Ponta do Castelo is just a few minutes’ walk from the beach. It’s a stunning, rocky viewpoint that gives you a completely different perspective over the water.
For more elevated views, there are a handful of “miradouros” (viewpoints) within a 10 to 20-minute drive. Miradouro da Ponta do Escalvado is just 10 minutes down the road (though parking is limited), and Miradouro da Lomba do Vasco is a 15-minute drive slightly further inland (with better parking). Both offer incredible, sweeping views of the coastline as the sky changes color!
Dinner – Nonna’s Teeth & Tomatoes

After the sun goes down, we recommend driving back toward Ponta Delgada for dinner. It’s much easier to navigate the island’s roads before it gets too late, and there aren’t a ton of dining options right near the sunset spots anyway.
Once you’re back in town, head to Nonna’s Teeth & Tomatoes. This is a wonderfully casual, well-loved spot that specializes in fantastic Italian food. After last night’s more traditional meal, we loved switching things up with some incredible wood-fired pizza and fresh pasta. We tried the truffle pizza (couldn’t resist), and it was everything we’d hoped for and more!
The atmosphere is super laid-back and welcoming, and the best part is that they’re open late, so you can really take your time getting here after sunset.
Dessert – La Gelateria

You can’t have Italian food for dinner without following it up with some gelato! Luckily, La Gelateria is located right next door to Nonna’s, making it the easiest and most delicious dessert stop possible.
This little shop serves up some seriously tasty, authentic gelato with a great mix of classic and creative flavors. We tried the pistachio and the dark chocolate, and both were incredibly rich and creamy! It’s the perfect sweet treat to enjoy while taking a slow evening stroll through the streets of Ponta Delgada before heading back to your hotel. They’re open until 10 pm except when they’re closed on Mondays and Tuesdays, so there’s no need to rush your dinner!
Day 3
Breakfast – Café Clipper

We recommend starting your third day at Café Clipper, which is a quaint and welcoming local cafe that opens bright and early at 6:30 am every day (except Sundays).
Because you’ve got quite the adventurous morning ahead of you, take this as your opportunity to fuel up. They offer something for everyone, including full, hearty breakfasts and lighter bites like sandwiches and pastries, so you can order exactly what you need depending on how hungry you are. We both went with a classic ham and cheese on toast, and it really hit the spot. Plus, the coffee is a 10 out of 10, which we always appreciate!
Morning Option 1 – Ride a quad bike around the Sete Cidades Volcano

Now for something a little more adventurous! This quad bike tour around Sete Cidades was easily one of the most fun things we did on the island. If you’re up for a bit of action, this is such a cool way to experience one of São Miguel’s most famous landscapes.
After breakfast at Café Clipper, you’ll head out to meet your guide for the 9 am tour (it runs until around 12 or 1 pm) and get set up on your ATV before setting off from Fenais da Luz. We were a little unsure at first, but the guides made everything super easy and walked us through exactly what to do, so we felt comfortable pretty quickly. From there, you’ll cruise along scenic coastal roads before heading inland to the rugged terrain surrounding the caldera.

This is where it gets really fun! Instead of sticking to paved roads, you’ll ride up dirt trails to viewpoints that most people never get to see. We loved passing spots like the Muro das Nove Janelas aqueduct and climbing up to Pico da Cruz. It felt like we were constantly getting better and better views. You’ll also stop at Miradouro das Cumeeiras, which has unreal views over the crater and coastline, before riding along paths near Cerrado das Freiras with the famous blue and green lakes below.
Just a heads up, it can get chilly and a bit muddy up there, we definitely weren’t spotless by the end, but that’s half the fun! It’s such a different way to see Sete Cidades and way more exciting than sticking to the usual viewpoints.
Morning Option 2 – Take a jeep around the Siete Cidades region

If riding a quad bike sounds a bit too intense, this half-day Jeep tour is such a great alternative—and still just as scenic. You’ll get to experience all the highlights of Sete Cidades without having to worry about navigating the steep, winding roads yourself.
After breakfast, you’ll head out for the 9 am tour (it runs until around 12 or 1 pm), hopping into a comfortable 4×4 while your guide takes care of the driving. We loved this option for a more laid-back experience, especially since it still takes you off the main roads and into some of the island’s most beautiful spots. You’ll explore the western side of São Miguel, including the famous Sete Cidades Caldera, which is easily one of the most iconic landscapes on the island.
Along the way, you’ll stop at some of the best viewpoints, including Vista do Rei, where you’ll get that classic view over the twin lakes, Lagoa Azul and Lagoa Verde. You’ll also drive along the rim of the crater, pulling over often to take in the scenery from different angles, which we really appreciated.
Down inside the crater, you’ll have time to explore the village of Sete Cidades, pop into the Igreja de São Nicolau, and even grab a quick coffee. It’s a really nice mix of viewpoints, local culture, and easy exploring, all with a guide sharing interesting insights along the way.
It’s relaxed, super scenic, and a great way to experience Sete Cidades without any of the stress—perfect if you still want the adventure, just at a slightly slower pace.
Lunch – O Avião

After an adventurous morning exploring Sete Cidades, you’ll definitely be ready for a good meal! That’s why we’re sending you to O Avião (closed Sundays), a fantastic, casual lunch spot that opens right at noon, right around when your tour should end.
This restaurant is known for its extensive seafood options and super relaxed atmosphere. The portions are generous, and the fish is incredibly fresh. We tried the grilled limpets (a local Azorean specialty) and the catch of the day, and both were cooked to absolute perfection. It might not look like much on the outside, but trust me when I tell you, you’ll be so glad you stopped by!
Afternoon – Visit Gorreana Tea Plantation

Once you’re all finished up with lunch, it’s time to head to one of the most unique stops on the island: the Gorreana Tea Plantation. It’s about a 30-minute drive from Ponta Delgada, so you should arrive around 2:30 or 3 pm, which gives you plenty of time to explore before they close at 6 pm.
This is actually Europe’s oldest and only tea plantation, and it is absolutely beautiful! You can wander right through the terraced fields, which look incredible against the backdrop of the ocean, and you can also tour the historic factory (and taste a few teas). The best part is it’s completely free to enter, and there’s even a lovely little hiking trail that winds through the estate.
For timings, you’ll probably want to plan on spending about an hour touring the facility and doing tastings, and then another hour walking the trails. For more information on what to expect, you can visit the official website here.
Evening – Azores Brewing Company

After your tea tastings, it’s time to switch into evening mode!
Just a 13-minute drive from the plantation is the Azores Brewing Company. This is a fantastic, women-owned craft brewery that makes some seriously yummy local beers. The location is tucked away in an industrial park, but it’s just a short drive from Ribeira Seca and absolutely worth the stop.
We loved the quirky, industrial-chic vibe inside, and it’s a great place to try something totally different from the usual local wines. We shared a flight of their signature brews and honestly couldn’t pick a favorite!
When you visit, make sure to keep an eye on the clock. They’re only open until 7 pm most days (and close at 6 pm Monday through Wednesday), so you might need to wrap up your tea exploring a bit early to get here in time.
Dinner – TukáTulá Beach Bar

For dinner tonight, you’re heading to TukáTulá Beach Bar, which is only a 7-minute drive from the brewery. This spot has an absolutely incredible view and a fantastic, laid-back atmosphere right on the water. For food, you can expect a mix of fresh seafood, burgers, and great cocktails, making it the perfect casual end to a busy day! We shared a lobster roll and the grilled octopus, and both were out of this world.
When planning your day, know that this spot is open until 10 pm, and when you’re finished, it’s only about a 20-minute drive back to Ponta Delgada. Not bad at all!
If you’re only spending 3 days in São Miguel, this is a great place to wrap things up. You’ll leave having experienced a little bit of everything—from volcanic landscapes and coastal views to incredible food and unique adventures.
Day 4
Breakfast – Jardim Natural Foods & Coffee

If you have more time in São Miguel, lucky you! You’ve had a busy few days, so today we’d like for you to enjoy a slower start and head to Jardim Natural Foods & Coffee for brunch.
This beloved brunch spot opens at 10 am, except on Mondays when they’re closed, so you can sleep in guilt-free! For food, you can expect a menu packed with healthy, fresh, and beautifully presented options. We tried the Turkish eggs and avocado toast, and both were absolutely delicious! The pancakes coming out of the kitchen also looked really good (but we just weren’t in the mood for anything too sweet).
After you’ve thoroughly enjoyed your brunch and a cup of coffee or tea, it’s time to hit the road to explore the southern coast!
Morning – Free time to explore the South Coast

Later this afternoon, you’ll be setting off on a boat tour to see the stunning Vila Franca do Campo Islet. The afternoon meeting point is only a 25-minute drive from Ponta Delgada, but there are several fantastic stops you should check out along the way!
Here’s what we recommend:
- Arruda Pineapple Plantation – The Azores are famous for producing incredibly sweet pineapples, and just outside of Ponta Delgada, you can visit this historic pineapple plantation and taste the fruit for yourself! It opens early at 9 am (and you only need about 30 minutes here), so it’s worth a stop if you have the time.
- Caloura – This is a charming fishing village known for its natural swimming pools and crystal-clear water. We loved stopping by the Piscina de Caloura (an outdoor swimming pool) and the Volcanic Mystery Shore. This village is a bit off the main tourist trail, but it offers incredibly pretty views of the sea.
- Miradouro de Nossa Senhora da Paz – You may have stopped here briefly on your tour from day one, but the views over the town and the ocean from this overlook, located above Vila Franca do Campo, are so spectacular that it’s absolutely worth a second look, especially if you didn’t have time to take many pictures.
- Explore the town of Vila Franca do Campo – Once you park up, take some time to wander around! We highly recommend stopping by Queijadas do Morgado to try their famous local custard tarts, checking out the marina, and seeing the historic church, the Igreja de São Miguel Arcanjo.
You should have plenty of time to hit at least a few of these spots before your boat tour, so play it by ear and see where the morning takes you. Just make sure you leave enough time to get to the meeting point, you won’t want to miss seeing that islet!
Alternate option – Hike Cascata do Salto do Prego

If you’re feeling energetic and want to tackle one of the most popular hikes in São Miguel instead of the coastal stops, this is a great alternative!
Cascata do Salto do Prego is a beautiful waterfall hike located about an hour and 15 minutes from Ponta Delgada. The hike itself takes about 2 hours round trip, winding through lush, jungle-like forests before rewarding you with a stunning waterfall where you can actually take a cold, refreshing dip! If you choose this option, just make sure to head out early; after the hike, you’ll have a 1-hour drive back to the meeting point for your afternoon boat tour.
Afternoon – Explore Vila Franca do Campo Islet on a glass-bottom boat and snorkeling trip

After spending the morning on land, this is your chance to see São Miguel from a completely different perspective. The Vila Franca do Campo Islet, a perfectly round volcanic crater just off the coast, is one of the island’s most iconic sights, and this glass-bottom boat tour is such a fun way to experience it up close.
It all starts at the marina in Vila Franca do Campo, with departures around 2:30 pm and typically returning sometime between 4:30 and 5 pm (although we were out until almost 6 pm!). After a quick intro from your guide, you’ll head out along the coastline, passing dramatic cliffs and volcanic rock formations that look even better from the water.
Once you reach the islet, the perspective completely changes. The glass-bottom boat lets you look directly into the crystal-clear Atlantic, and the visibility is better than you’d expect. Depending on the day, you might spot schools of fish, unique underwater formations, and other marine life. Plus, having a marine biologist onboard makes it even better, since they’ll point things out and explain what you’re seeing.
You’ll also have the chance to jump in and snorkel near the islet or along the coast, which was such a fun bonus and a great way to cool off after a warm day.
It’s a super easy, laid-back experience that still feels unique, and a really fun way to wrap up your day along the south coast. If you’re even a little curious about what’s below the surface, this one is definitely worth adding to your itinerary.
Why We Book Tours with Viator
Viator is a trusted online booking system for tours around the world! We almost always book our tours using Viator for a couple of reasons:
Dinner – Bar Caloura

After your afternoon out on the water, you’ll probably be heading back toward Ponta Delgada to your hotel. Right on your way home is Bar Caloura, which is widely considered one of the best seafood restaurants on the entire island.
The specialty here is whatever fish was caught that day, grilled to perfection and served with simple, delicious sides like salads and crusty bread. When we visited, we tried the white sea bream and swordfish, and both were sublime. The vibe here is also so refreshing, with open-air seating with seaside views (nothing better!). It really is such a special spot to wrap up your second-to-last day on the island!

Day 5
Full day – Explore the inner island’s highlights

If you’re spending the full 5 days in São Miguel, this final day is all about switching things up and heading inland. After a few days along the coast, this full-day hidden gems tour shows you a quieter, lesser-known side of the island, and it’s by far the easiest way to explore it.
With pickup starting around 9 am and a return around 5 pm, you’ll spend the day discovering some of the island’s central and northern highlights that are much easier to access with a guide. Instead of the usual busy viewpoints, you’ll visit more tucked-away locations like Fenais da Ajuda, along with several stunning waterfalls, including the 40-meter (132-foot) Salto da Farinha and the hidden Cascata do Risco. There are viewpoints around nearly every corner, so expect plenty of stops for photos along the way.

We loved how relaxed the pace felt. There’s no strenuous hiking involved, so it’s a great option if you’re ready for a slower day but still want to see a lot. Plus, having a guide really makes a difference here—they share so much insight into the island’s history, culture, and landscapes that you’d definitely miss on your own.
Lunch is also included, with a traditional Azorean buffet that was such a nice break in the middle of the day. It’s such a nice mid-day break and a great way to experience more of the island’s food without having to think about where to go.
It’s an easy, stress-free way to see a different side of São Miguel, and a great balance to the busier days earlier in this itinerary. With so many glowing reviews, it’s clear this tour is a favorite for a reason, and a really memorable way to wrap up your time on the island!
Dinner – Casa do bife O GALEGO

For your final dinner in Sao Miguel, we’re sending you to Casa do bife O GALEGO. The Azores are known for their high-quality, pasture-raised cattle, and this restaurant is one of the absolute best places to experience it.
The menu features all the Portuguese classics, like steak and rice, pork chops, and omelets, and you can expect an atmosphere that’s super warm and friendly. When we went for dinner, we both ordered a signature sirloin steak each with garlic bread and olives to share as a starter. After keeping it light with lots of fish and seafood throughout our trip, this heartier, more celebratory meal felt like the perfect finale!
When planning your evening, keep in mind that this spot opens daily at 7 pm, though it’s closed on Sundays and reservations are recommended (especially during busy seasons).
Evening – Résvés Street Bar

To end your night (and your trip!), take a short walk over to Résvés Street Bar in downtown Ponta Delgada. This is a lively bar known for mixing up some of the best craft cocktails in the city, and it’s the perfect place to toast to a successful visit to São Miguel.
The bartenders are incredibly skilled and happy to answer any questions you might have about local spirits or classic Portuguese cocktails. We tried a couple of their signature gin cocktails, and they definitely did not disappoint!
Even if cocktails aren’t really your thing, it’s still worth popping in to experience the city at night (just note they’re closed on Mondays). Plus, it keeps the vacation vibes going for as long as possible before you have to leave!

Renting a Car in Europe

Exploring Europe by car is a fantastic way to uncover hidden gems—think charming villages, scenic countryside, and off-the-beaten-path spots that trains and buses might miss. Driving here is generally straightforward, but it’s good to be prepared for some regional quirks.
We always use Discover Cars to book our rentals and can’t recommend them enough. It’s super easy to compare prices, check company ratings, find automatic cars (which can be tricky in Europe!), and add affordable full coverage insurance.
