We love it here because you can enjoy rolling countryside by day, and buzzing pubs at night. 

The good news is that Galway is fairly compact, so getting around is easy. In this guide, we’ll walk you through the best areas to stay in Galway and share our favorite hotel picks for every budget.

Galway is a pretty compact city, so choosing where to stay isn’t too much of a challenge. Most of the main sights, pubs, and restaurants are located close together, especially around the city center, so it’s very possible to explore a lot of Galway on foot. The city also has a reliable bus network, so it’s still easy to get around if you’re staying slightly further out.

Downtown Galway is usually the best choice for first-time visitors because it’s lively and central, and very easy to get around without a car. Just outside the center, Salthill offers a quieter, coastal setting along Galway Bay. You can still reach the city by bus or taxi, or even on a longer walk! 

Meanwhile, areas like Terryland and Headford Road are more practical than scenic, but they’re a good option if you’re traveling by car. Parking is much easier here, and it’s ideal if you’re planning day trips around County Galway. Driving into the city center can be more of a hassle than it looks, so staying just outside often makes things simpler.

Just keep in mind that central hotels and the most popular Salthill stays can book out well in advance during summer and festival periods. It’s always worth booking early if you’ve got your heart set on staying close to the action or by the bay!

Downtown Galway is the heart of the city and easily the best place to stay if it’s your first time visiting. This is where we stayed, and we loved the colorful streets and the famous pub scene – of course! Plus, a lot of Galway’s top attractions are within a short walk of each other, so it’s easy to explore the best the city has to offer. If you want to be right in the middle of the action, this is the place for you! 

Eyre Square is one of the main hubs here, and it’s a great starting point for exploring the city. From there, you can wander down Shop Street, which is always buzzing with street performers and Irish traditional pubs. Meanwhile, the Spanish Arch and Galway City Museum sit along the river, while Galway Cathedral is just a short walk away – and well worth visiting, I might add.

What we love most about staying in Downtown Galway is how easy everything feels. You can spend your days exploring on foot and your evenings hopping between pubs with live music. It’s busy and energetic, but that’s all part of the charm. For a short stay in Galway, we think it’s hard to beat.

Leonardo Hotel Galway – $$$

Leonardo Hotel Galway is a modern hotel located right along the River Corrib, just a short walk from the Spanish Arch and the city center. The location is excellent if you want to be close to the action while still having a slightly quieter setting by the water.

The rooms are comfortable and contemporary, and many offer views over the river. There’s also an on-site restaurant and bar, which makes it easy to unwind after a day of exploring. With its great location and polished feel, we think that this is a solid choice if you’re looking for a more upscale stay in Galway! Rooms here typically start at around €220 per night during the warmer months.

If Leonardo Hotel Galway is fully booked, The Galmont Hotel & Spa is another great option located near Eyre Square. The hotel offers spacious rooms, a full spa, and views over Lough Atalia.

Harbour Hotel is also worth considering if you prefer a modern stay close to the docks. The hotel offers stylish rooms and an excellent on-site restaurant, all within easy walking distance of the city center.

Imperial Hotel Galway – $$

Imperial Hotel Galway is a fantastic mid-range option located right in the heart of Downtown Galway, just steps from Eyre Square and Shop Street. The location really couldn’t be better if you want to be surrounded by the city’s best shops and pubs!

The rooms are comfortable and stylish, with a mix of modern decor and classic touches. There’s also a popular on-site bar and restaurant, which adds to the hotel’s lively atmosphere. Thanks to its unbeatable location and reasonable prices, we think this is a great choice for first-time visitors. Rooms typically start from around €180 per night during the warmer months.

For a similar central stay with a slightly more boutique feel, The Victoria Hotel is another excellent option located just off Eyre Square. The hotel offers comfortable rooms and a relaxed, boutique feel in a super central location.

Eyre Square Hotel is also a great alternative right in the center of town. The hotel offers comfortable, nicely decorated rooms with easy access to Galway’s main sights and nightlife.

Salthill 

BEST FOR SEA VIEWS AND RELAXATION

• Beautiful coastal setting with sea views and fresh air
• More relaxed and quieter than Downtown Galway

Cons

• Further from the city center (around 5–10 minutes by car or bus)
• Less nightlife and fewer dining options than downtown

Salthill sits just west of Galway’s city center and offers a completely different vibe to the busy streets downtown. This seaside suburb is known for its coastal walks and ocean views, and its laid-back atmosphere makes it a great choice if you want somewhere a little more peaceful to stay.

One of the highlights here is the Salthill Promenade, a long walkway that stretches along Galway Bay. It’s perfect for a morning stroll or an evening walk at sunset, and you’ll often see locals taking a dip in the sea along the way. We also loved watching brave swimmers diving from the Blackrock Diving Tower, and they actually do this all year round!

There’s also Galway Atlantaquaria nearby, which is a fun stop if you’re traveling with kids, along with several small beaches dotted along the bay. Despite its calmer feel, Salthill is still close enough to the city center. You can walk there in around 30 minutes or hop on a quick bus or taxi. All in all, Salthill is a great fit if you want a scenic base by the sea while still being close to Galway’s main attractions.

Salthill Hotel – $$ 

Salthill Hotel is a well-known stay located right along the waterfront, just steps from the promenade. If you want uninterrupted sea views, the location is hard to beat! There are also tons of pretty coastal paths nearby, so it’s a great choice if you’re big on walking.

The rooms are comfortable and modern, and many overlook Galway Bay. There’s also a large leisure center with a pool, gym, and sauna, plus an on-site restaurant with ocean views. With its setting and facilities, we think this is a well-priced option for a relaxing stay in Galway. Rooms typically start from around €250 per night during the summer months.

If Salthill Hotel is unavailable for your travel dates, Galway Bay Hotel Conference & Leisure Centre is another excellent option located right on the promenade. The hotel offers spacious rooms, a full leisure center, and beautiful views over Galway Bay.

Black Cat – $

Black Cat is a small and stylish guesthouse located in the heart of Salthill, just a short walk from the promenade. It’s a great pick if you’re looking for something more intimate and budget-friendly.

The rooms are cozy and nicely designed, with a boutique feel that makes the stay feel a bit more personal. With its relaxed atmosphere and great location near the sea, we think this is a lovely option for a quieter stay in Galway. Plus, there’s a taxi rank right out front, which is super handy for getting to and from fun nights out Downtown! Prices here usually start at around €125 per night.

Terryland/Barrylane

BEST FOR VALUE AND DAY TRIPPING

• Easier parking and better value compared to the city center
• Great base for road trips around County Galway

Cons

• Less atmospheric than Downtown Galway or Salthill
• Not within walking distance of most main sights

Terryland and the Headford Road area sit just outside Galway’s city center and offer a more practical base for your stay. I’ll be honest, this isn’t the most scenic part of Galway, but it works really well if you’re traveling by car and looking to save a bit of money on accommodation!

One of the biggest advantages of staying here is how easy it is to get in and out. You’ll avoid the tighter streets and limited parking in the center, which can make a big difference if you’re planning to explore places like Connemara or the Cliffs of Moher. It’s also a convenient area for shopping and everyday essentials, with Galway Shopping Centre and Terryland Retail Park both nearby.

There aren’t many major attractions in this part of the city, but you can visit spots like Terryland Castle or take a short drive into the center for sightseeing. Buses also run regularly to Eyre Square, so getting around without a car is still doable. Overall, we think this area is best suited to travelers who prioritize value for money and easy day trips over atmosphere and nightlife.

The g Hotel & Spa – $$$

The g Hotel & Spa is one of the most stylish hotels in Galway! It’s located just outside the city center in the Terryland area. The hotel is known for its bold, designer interiors created by Philip Treacy, which give the whole place a very unique and luxurious feel.

The rooms are spacious and modern, with plush furnishings and sleek finishes throughout. There’s also a full spa, a restaurant, and a beautifully designed lounge cocktail bar that’s perfect for grabbing a drink after a day of exploring. If you’re looking for a high-end stay with a bit of personality, this is a great choice! Rooms here typically start at around €350 per night during peak season.

For a similar stylish stay nearby, Radisson RED Galway is another great option with a modern design and a lively atmosphere. The hotel offers contemporary rooms and great facilities, along with easy access to the city center.

Flannery’s Hotel – $$

Flannery’s Hotel is a polished and comfortable hotel located along the Dublin Road, just outside Galway’s city center. The location works well if you’re driving, because the hotel’s location means easy access to major roads, and there’s free on-site parking available.

The rooms are spacious and comfortable, with a traditional style that feels warm and welcoming. There’s also a popular restaurant and bar on-site, so you don’t have to head into town to grab a meal. Rooms typically start from around €150 per night.

If Flannery’s Hotel is fully booked, Nox Hotel Galway is another modern option located nearby with sleek rooms and a relaxed atmosphere. The hotel offers good value and is well-suited to short stays or road trips.

The Connacht Hotel is also worth considering if you prefer a larger property with more facilities. The hotel offers spacious rooms and a leisure center with a big indoor pool, which can come in handy given the tempestuous Irish weather!
